THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls Colonels walked-off twice on Thursday morning for a pair of run-rule wins over the East Texas A&M University softball team via scores of 9-1 and 8-0 at Swanner Field.
GAME 1: NICHOLLS 9, EAST TEXAS A&M 2 (Five Innings)
After a scoreless first two innings, the Colonels scored seven in the third. Liliana Robledo hit a two-run double, Kayleigh Lugowski plated a run on an RBI double, and another two-run double from Gabby Higbee. A run scored on a sacrifice fly by Laylin Sturm, while Robledo drew a bases-loaded walk.
The lone Lion run of the day was a solo home run in the fourth by
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial), her 11
th of the season.
Nicholls walked it off in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double by Higbee.
Aside from the home run by Wright, both
Aaliyah Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) and
Charli Anger (Lubbock – Cooper) had a base hit each in the game for the Lions. Higbee went 4 for 4 with four RBIs for the Colonels.
Emma Olsen (Elk Grove, Calif.) got the loss for the Lions, being charged with nine earned runs in 4.2 innings, while Molly Yoo took the complete-game win, allowing just the home run to Wright.
GAME 2: NICHOLLS 8, EAST TEXAS A&M 0 (Six Innings)
Before an out was registered in the bottom of the first, Madison Moak hit a two-run home run to center. Higbee added an RBI double in the fourth, while Claire Sisco hit a one-run base hit, and two scored on a two-run double by Moak.
In the sixth, Nevanna Smith hit a solo home run to lead off the inning and then a sacrifice fly by Krause plated to Sisco for the second walk-off win of the day for the Colonels.
The Lions were held to just one hit in the game, and it came off the bat of
KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.). Sisco and Moak went 7 for 8 at the top of the Nicholls' order with five RBIs and four runs scored.
The winning pitcher for the Colonels was Sierra Ouelette, who struck out four in the complete-game shutout.
Madison Kloepper (Llano) gave up eight earned runs in the loss.
The Colonels have now won 10 in a row over the Lions, who won the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Lions fall to 6-33 overall and 1-13 in Southland Conference action this season, while Nicholls falls to 21-16 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
