COMMERCE – After a 13-5 win in five innings by the McNeese Cowgirls over the East Texas A&M University softball team to begin Friday evening's action, the nightcap was suspended in the fourth inning at the John Cain Family Softball Complex due to inclement weather.
The Cowgirls held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when inclement weather delays hit Commerce. The second game will resume at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the season finale and the Lions' Senior Day ceremony at the conclusion of both games.
With the bases loaded in the top of the first, Corrine Poncho reached on a fielding error with two outs as Maddie Weeks came around to score.
In the second, Kassidy Chance hit an RBI double, and Rylee Cloud drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Jada Munoz hit a solo home run in the third.
As part of a six-run fourth, Weeks drove in a run on a base hit, both Maddie Taylor and Munoz drew bases-loaded walks. Poncho added a run on a sacrifice fly and Meiko Dominguez had an RBI base hit.
Cloud, Nyjah Fontenot and Brylie Fontenot had RBI doubles each in the fifth.
All five runs for the Lions came in the bottom of the fifth.
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) hit an RBI single up the middle,
Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Cooper) drew a bases-loaded walk, while both
Lexi Gamez (Orange, Calif.) and
Emma Rodrigues (Frisco – Little Elm) had RBI base hits.
Emma Olsen (Elk Grove, Calif.) got the loss for the Lions, being charged with eight earned runs in three innings, while Taylor took the win for the Cowgirls, tossing 4.1 innings of shutout ball.
The loss drops the Lions to 6-44 on the season and 1-24 in Southland Conference play, while the Cowgirls are 33-18 overall and 16-9 in conference action.
