COMMERCE – East Texas A&M University raised over $140,000 at this year's Night of Champions in support of Lion student-athletes, which is a new record in the seven-year history of the event.
Held on Saturday with scenic views of Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, the event drew over 200 enthusiastic supporters and featured silent and live auctions, great food, and unforgettable entertainment at the Hilton Dallas/Rockwall Lakefront.
Over $8,700 were raised for the Student-Athlete Excellence Fund, unlocking a $5,000 match by Atmos Energy. A new addition for this year, the goal for the Dive for Five challenge was hit as well, with coaches
Clint Dolezel, Joe Morales, and
George Pincock set to sky-dive later this summer, while vice president for philanthropy and engagement Devin Girod even jumped in to raise additional dollars and will sky dive with the three Lion coaches.
The event also featured remarks from Lion alumni-athlete Tatum Wright and Lion Athletics Hall of Famer Duane Hicks, who shared the lasting impact Lion Athletics has had on their lives.
Wright reflected on earning the opportunity to walk on as a freshman before ultimately receiving a scholarship. Hicks noted that his time at East Texas A&M played a key role in his success after college.
