A native South African and married to head coach Lise Malherbe, Swanepoel represented South Africa as a junior golfer.

He played golf at Columbus State University where he earned his MBA degree and has been a professional caddy since 2013. Swanepoel currently caddies on the PGA tour and enters his third season with the Lions as a volunteer coach.
