Lauren Mason enters her second season as head women's and men's golf coach at A&M-Commerce in 2020-21.
In the 2019-20 season, the Lion women had one of their best seasons on record placing in the top five teams in five of their six tournaments with runner-up finishes at the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational and the Jack Brown Memorial. The Lion women ranked 25th nationally in the GolfStat rankings at the time the spring season was canceled, with Sophie-Charlott Hempel ranked 72nd, Michelle Becker ranked 83rd, Sarah Wongsinth ranked 87th, and Paige-Lee Garris ranked 122nd in the nation. Hempel and Wongsinth were named second team All-Lone Star Conference and the team won the LSC Academic Championship, tying their own LSC record with a 3.809 grade point average. The LSC Academic Championship was the team's second consecutive title and fifth overall. Garris, Hempel, and Karlee Nichols were named WGCA All-American Scholars.
The men's team had two top six finishes to complete the season at the Jack Brown Memorial and the LCU Chap Classic, with the final round of the spring marking the Lions' best score. Zach Burch was named a GCAA All-America Scholar.
She was hired as assistant men's and women's golf coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce in September 2018 and named head coach of Lion Golf in August 2019.
"Lauren Mason embodies exactly what you want in a coach and leader. She was an outstanding player at Texas Tech and completed two degrees in four and a half years, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She understands what it takes to be successful on and off the course, and can show players on both teams how to do it the right way,” said deputy director of athletics and senior woman administrator Judy Sackfield.
Mason joins the Lion staff after a successful career at Texas Tech where she competed with her teammates at two different NCAA National Championships (2015 & 2017). Some of Lauren’s highlights while at TTU include a career best finish of T-1 at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate, lowest 18-hole score of 68 at the Web.com Intercollegiate, and lowest 54-hole score of 213 at the Web.com Intercollegiate. Mason also served on the TTU Student Athlete Advisory Committee while playing golf.
Prior to her time at TTU, Mason was a member of the 2011 and 2012 Queensland Junior State Team Champions and a member of the 2012 Queensland Women’s State Team. She was the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Sunshine Coast Amateur Open Champion as well.
Mason also earned numerous academic honors. She has been a three-time recipient of the TECHSPY’s High Merit Award; named to the Academic All-Big 12 Women’s Golf Team; President’s Honor Roll List; Dean’s List; selected as the TECHSPY’s Top Graduating Senior; and received the 1A Faculty Athletics Representative’s Academic Excellence Award. Mason earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sport Management and a M.S. in Sport Management, both from Texas Tech University, and is originally from Queensland, Australia.
