Joe Davis

Davis came to A&M-Commerce in the spring of 2017 after four seasons at Clemson as a graduate assistant and volunteer assistant coach with the jumps. Before that, he served as a volunteer assistant at Virginia Tech responsible for multis and assisted the other jumpers. Davis, a two-time first team All-American in his own right at Virginia Tech, has arrived in Commerce eager to assist the Lions to similar success.

During his first outdoor season as an assistant in 2017, the program enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in program history. The men's team was crowned the LSC Champions after finishing first at the LSC Championships. The women's team also had a strong finish, placing third. 31 Lions were named to the All-Conference Team, including Gage Bowles and Devontae Steele in the triple jump and Florian Obst in the decathlon. Obst would also be named Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year. All three were named to the All-Region Team and all three qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In 2015, he helped Torian Ware to an ACC Champion and second-team All-America honors during the outdoor season. He also helped Lauren Terstappen to All-ACC honors and a school record in the pole vault (4.15m). In 2014, Davis helped Ware to second-team All-America honors in the outdoor season, also mentoring Land to a first-team All-America honor in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.  Lauren also set the Clemson Indoor school record during that same season (4.10m).

As a student-athlete, Davis was vital to Virginia Tech’s modern era success in the pole vault on both the ACC and national level from 2008-12. He claimed first-team All-America status in 2011 after an eighth-place finish at the outdoor nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. It was his first All-America honor in his first NCAA national meet. He completed his collegiate career in the spring of 2012 by earning his second first-team All-America honor in the outdoor pole vault. Davis cleared 17-8.5 on his first try — a personal best — to earn a seventh-place finish.

Davis’ final performance in a Virginia Tech uniform put him fourth on the school’s all-time outdoor performance list. He is eighth on the Hokies’ all-time indoor performance list with a best of 17-7 from 2012. He scored in all eight ACC Championships over his career and was a two-time medalist as well.

Davis earned his level I and Level II (jumps) coaching certification from USA track and field. Davis also completed the technical coaching certification and program management certification from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academy.

The Sarasota, Fla., native earned his undergraduate degree in natural resources conservation and sustainability, with a concentration in recreation management, from Virginia Tech in May 2012. He also minored in forestry and urban forestry. He is finishing his Master of Science in Athletic Leadership from Clemson University in 2017.

Davis is married to the former Morgan Allen.
