Last Monday afternoon the picked teams of the local college and Commerce High School met in football on the College Athletic Field. As the time of starting was late the captains decided to play only five minute quarters.
The High School won the toss and chose to defend the west goal, Mayo, for the College kicked off. Maloney of the High School returned the ball to his own 45 yard line. It was here that the High School tried its end run, but they did not seem to get from it as everytime they tried at Mayo, for the College who was playing in the secondary defense would bore through the interference and get the man with the ball, this was tried with little succes for 3 times, all resulting in the same. Then resorting to different tactics Jernigin called the ball over tackle, this play was of great value as it finally landed the High School on the E.T.N.C. twenty yard line. Jernigin then hoisted a beautiful pass to Griffith who carried the ball over for touchdown. Estes kicked goal. Time up. Score 7 and 0, H.S. leads. In the second quarter, Estes kicked off for the High School. Johnson for the College returned the ball to the High School's 40 yard line. McKenzie then took the ball through center for five yards, then Mayo called for the ball, on this play the most brilliant of the game was pulledoff, Mayo after receiving the ball run around right end where Griffith tackled him, but before the latter could down him Mayo had passed the ball back to Folks who then with Mayo's assistance in warding off two men advanced the ball to the High School's 20 yard line. The same play was then tried around left end, but Mayo not able to pass the ball to Folks carried it through center for four yards. Hoke Smith then carried the ball thro right tackle for touchdown. The punt out was a failure. Time up. In the second half Estes for High School kicked off, Strother for College carried the ball back to the center of the field only to fumble and Griffith fell on the ball, High School's ball. The next play was a pass by Jernigin which McKenzie intercepted on the College's 35 yard line. It was here that the College began to spring new plays on the High School, the latter lining up for what they thought was the College's only ground gaining play, end running, were completely baffled when the College began a series of bewildering line plunges, the ball was first called to McKenzie through "dumb" signals who went through for 9 yards. On the next play Folks carried the ball through for twelve yards. Mayo then carried the ball through center for an additional twelve yards. After which Hoke Smith came in with his quota of 10 yards, the ball winding up on the High School's 3 yard line. A great squabble then arose, the captain of the High School team, Rutland, endeavoring to convince the refree that when a man falls to his knees with the ball the ball is dead and he is then crawling if he attempts to regain his feet. It seemed that there was no player who could stop Folks when he got the ball and the best any of them could do was to slack his speed by getting in his way.. Rutland here forfeited the game to the College. It is stated that there will be no more games between the College and High School owing to just such unpleasant circumstances as arose in this game. The score was officially announced as 1 to 0 for the College.
