East Texas State's under-rated Lions upset the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack's dreams of a Lone Star Conference crown in the mud of Lion field with a 13-0 victory. David Hurst, Lion scatback, took the opening kickoff standing on his own goal line and went up the west sideline behind a wave of Lion blockers. Hurst left his interference and the bewildered Lumberjacks in mid-field and sprinted the remaining distance for the score. With Donald King holding, Bobby Nations booted the extra point. In the second quarter, the Lions engineered a drive that carried them to the Lumberjack 26 yard line. From there co-captain Bill Engle took to the air and hit end Joe Murphy with a 26 yard pass for another Lion counter. Nation's try for the extra point was wide and the Lions led 13-0. From that point on the game was a swapping of fumbles, punts and pass interceptions. The 'Jacks took to the air in a last minute flurry of passes, but did not generate enough power for a drive.
