E.T. 61, Austin College 7

PLAYING AUSTIN COLLEGE on a wet, but fast field, the Lions breezed to an easy 40-0 halftime mark and then coasted to a 61-7 win by using reserves. Coach Smith showed nothing to the host of Tennessee Tech scouts in the stands looking over the Lions for the coming Tangerine Bowl game in Orlando, Florida, January 1st. In spite of the impressive halftime margin the sensational moments of the game came during the final two minutes of the game. Returning the starters to the field Catfish threw a final scare into the Tech scouts by scoring two quick markers in 120 seconds. Marvin Brown, a touchdown-mad dervish, broke from the Austin 48 and eluded seven tacklers to score standing up. Then on the final play of the game, R. C. Moore intercepted a Kangaroo pass on the Lion 16, ran to the Austin five, and then lateraled to Lucky Parks who made the score—long after the final whistle. In the first half, James Gray, passing behind good protection, connected with no less than five touchdown tosses. On the receiving end, Tommy McCormack caught two and Brown, Parks, and Don Yates tagged on to one each. Austin's lone tally came in the third quarter by Billy Bookout.
