RAMPAGING EAST TEXAS State closed out its 1952 football season by beating Sul Ross State 27-7. The win gave the Lions a clear title to their second straight Lone Star championship and sent them into the Tangerine Bowl as the Southwest's only undefeated eleven. Ending the only undefeated season since 1934, ET held the longest winning streak in the Southwest—18 games over two seasons. Adverse weather played an important role in this game with Sul Ross. The muddy field did as much to hold the Lions down as did the Lobo line. Scoring was opened when Bill Self hauled in a pass from James Gray that covered 16 yards. Marvin Brown broke into the scoring column on a one-yard smash. ET led 14-0. ET added another touchdown in the third period when Gray found Corder in the end zone with a 9-yard pass. The Lions made their last tally midway in the fourth period when Brown scampered untouched for 17 yards and a touchdown. Sul Ross crashed over for a score in the fourth period when sprint-man Don Bingham cut through the Lion ranks and raced 71 yards to score. Bingham added the point. ET was now ready for the Tangerine Bowl. With a two-week layoff the Lions returned to workouts for the tough contest with the once-defeated Tennessee Tech Eagles. During the regular 1952 season the Lions had gained a national reputation and was one of two Texas teams to gain invitations to a national New Year's Day Bowl game.
