Southeastern Oklahoma
State defensive end Lionel Gillespie tackled Texas A&M
University-Commerce quarterback Terry Mayo on a fourth and goal to
lead the Savage Storm to a 28-24 win in Commerce on Saturday
afternoon.
The Savage
Storm (5-5, 3-1 LSC North) outgained the Lions by a 410 to 382
margin in the win, including a decisive 147 to 96 advantage on the
ground. 138 of those yards came from running back Baylen Laury.
SOSU quarterback Brandon McCain spread 18 completions among
10-different receivers for four touchdown passes and 263
yards.
A&M-Commerce (4-5, 2-2
LSC North) quarterback Terry
Mayo threw for 286 yards on 26 of 42 passing for a touchdown
and an interception in the loss. Junior wide receiver Willie Thornton caught nine passes for
a game-high 137 yards. Senior linebacker Andrew Gamboa had 10 tackles, a fumble
recover and an interception in the loss.
The Lions went in front 24-21 with 11:37 left in the final
quarter on a seven-yard touchdown reception by
Nabil El-Amin from
Mayo. After a missed field goal by SOSU, A&M-Commerce went
three and out.
Southeastern Oklahoma State went three plays on 55 yards in 45
seconds as well as a pass interference call for the go-ahead and
eventual game-winning touchdown on a 17-yard touchdown reception by
Laury with 5:23 left in the contest.
A&M-Commerce mounted a pair of late rallies, both times,
the Savage Storm answered with an interception with 2:22 remaining
and the game-saving tackle by Gillespie with eight seconds
left.
The Lions will close out the 2008 season with a contest
against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. at Memorial
Stadium.
