A&M-Commerce Wins Two Out of Three at the Angelo Retina ASU Invitational

The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team began its 2009 season with a pair of straight set victories over Southern Arkansas (25-14, 25-20, 25-15) and New Mexico Highlands (25-13, 25-15, 25-16) and dropping a 25-10, 25-20, 22-25, 25-12 decision to St. Edward's at the Angelo Re tina ASU Invitational in San Angelo, Texas.

In the opening match of the day against Southern Arkansas, the Lions were led by senior Amy Addison, who had 14 kills and .419 hitting percentage. The attack for A&M-Commerce hit at a .355 clip in the win with 43 kills and only 10 errors. Senior Perla Faudoa had a match-high 30 assists and senior Lauren Flynn added to her school record with 15 more digs and a team-high two service aces. In her A&M-Commerce debut, freshman Rachel Robertson had eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage to go along with two block assists.

After hitting a .486 clip and one error in game one, A&M-Commerce raced to a 9-1 lead in game two and the Lady Muleriders were only able to get within four as the Lions took a 2-0 lead into the intermission. In game three, the Lions had six-different players record a kill and Faudoa had seven more assists en route to the 25-15 win.

In its second match of the afternoon against St. Edward's, the Lions attack was held to a -.048 hitting percentage. The Hilltoppers (1-0) managed to hit at a .227 clip, recorded six service aces and 5.5 blocks in the win.

Addison topped the A&M-Commerce attack for the second-straight match with a team-high nine kills in the defeat. Faudoa posted her first double double of the young season with 20 assists and 14 digs.

The Lions dropped the first two sets before rallying to win the third after the intermission. Momentum throughout the third game went back and forth as the two teams neither team could sustain its serve until the Lions capitalized on a Hilltopper error and a kill by junior Naomi Mays to take a 20-18 advantage. With the two-point advantage, the Lions sustained the momentum to take the third set.

In the fourth set, the Hilltoppers rebounded as they raced out to a 7-1 margin and went on to take the fourth game by a 25-12 margin.

The Lions entered their final match of the afternoon with a 1-1 mark and left San Angelo with its second 3-0 win of the day with a straight set, 25-13, 25-15, 25-16 win over New Mexico Highlands.

Addison paced a balanced attack with eight kills; Faudoa and Robertson added six and five, respectively. Plus, Faudoa added 23 assists, Flynn recorded 18 digs and Terra Ousley had a block solo and assisted on two more.

In the win, the Lions hit at a .250 clip and only had 10 attack errors, plus they managed to record six blocks.

In the opening game, A&M-Commerce hit at a .343 clip compared to .132 for their counterparts. Addison, Morgan Moeller, Ousley and Robertson, who each had three kills, led the Lions' attack. The Lions hit .333 in a 25-15 win in set two as Addison and Mays added three kills and in the decisive set three, the Lions managed to record three blocks and seven more kills.

Next up for A&M-Commerce is a trip to the Comfort Inn Invitational hosted by Northwest Missouri State, where the Lions will face Minnesota State-Moorhead, Quincy, Newman and host Bearcats, starting on Friday, Sept. 4.
