The Texas A&M
University-Commerce volleyball team raised its record to 8-3 on
Thursday night with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-10 win over Ouachita Baptist
and a 25-21, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21 win over Arkansas-Monticello at
the A&M-Commerce Field House.
The Lions are in the midst
of a four-match winning streak. Ouachita Baptist falls to 2-8 and
Arkansas-Monticello falls to 1-6.
After beginning the season
with nine matches away from home, the Lions were excited to play in
front of the hometown fans. Freshman Rachel
Robertson paced an A&M-Commerce attack that hit .279
win and committed just 12 errors in the straight-set win. The
Princeton, Texas native had a team-best 11 kills, senior
Amy Addison and juniors Terra
Ousley and Naomi Mays (pictured
by Jared Horn) each had six kills. The play at the net
was instrumental in the win as the Lions matched a season-high with
seven blocks. Senior Perla Faudoa recorded a match-high 36 assists
and senior Lauren Flynn had a match-high 27 digs
in the straight set; plus the Lions had five service aces including
two from freshman Ashleigh Barnett.
With back-to-back kills by
Mays and freshman Reagan Hayes and an OBU attack
error that gave A&M-Commerce a lead it would not relinquish in
the opening set. The Lions capitalized on a Tigers attack that made
seven errors an A&M-Commerce took the opening set. Roberts
paced an A&M-Commerce attack that hit .314 with five kills en
route to a 25-16 victory. In the second set, senior Amy Addison led
the Lions with five kills and Flynn had nine digs and Hayes had a
block solo and a block assist en route to the 25-15 win. The Lions
closed out the match with a .267 hitting percentage and just three
attack errors as six different players recorded a kill, including
four more from Robertson. Plus, Flynn had 13 digs and Robertson
posted a block solo and two block assists. In addition to the
blocking success of Robertson, the Lions had five total
blocks.
A mere two hours later,
the Lions played their second match of the evening and came away
victorious with a 25-21, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21 win over the Blossoms
of Arkansas Monticello. Naomi Mays and
Reagan Hayes led an attack that hit .221 with 14
and 10 kills, respectively. Faudoa had 42 assists and Flynn posted
a season-high 41 digs.
Seven players recorded a
kill as Addison led A&M-Commerce with five kills in the 25-21
win in the opening set. In the second set, the Lions hit .161 as
they dropped a 17-25 decision before bouncing back to take the
third set in convincing fashion by a 25-13 margin. In the third
set, Hayes had five kills and two service aces and Flynn added 11
digs to lead A&M-Commerce. To close out the match, the Lions
hit at a .262 clip as Mays had four kills and three different
players had three kills and Flynn added 11 more digs in the
win.
Next, Texas
A&M-Commerce will travel to Dallas to face host Dallas Baptist
at 5 pm on Friday, Southern Arkansas and Southwest Baptist on
Saturday at 11 am and 5 am, respectively.
