An 85-yard interception return by Drew Cuffee of No. 2 Abilene Christian on the first play of overtime led the visiting Wildcats to a 20-14 win over host Texas A&M-Commerce in the second annual Harvey Martin Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
The two teams overcame adverse conditions as rain fell throughout the contest as the two teams combined for 553 yards of offense and 17 punts.
Abilene Christian (3-0) running back Darryl Richardson ran 21 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns in the win for the Wildcats. The win by ACU snapped a seven-game winning streak for A&M-Commerce at the Cotton Bowl.
Texas A&M-Commerce (0-3) quarterback Adam Farkes came off the bench to complete 15 of 31 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown in the defeat. He connected with seven different receivers including Taylor Fore, who caught three passes for 49 yards and a game-tying touchdown with :32 left in regulation.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with the two teams combining for seven punts and 307 yards of total offense.
After punting on its first possession of the second half, Abilene Christian got on the board when Richardson scored the first of his two touchdowns on a four-yard touchdown run. A pair of runs by quarterback Zach Stewart set the Wildcats up for the touchdown, including a 32-yard run down to the A&M-Commerce 4.
With a 7-0 lead, Stewart was intercepted by A&M-Commerce senior linebacker Cory Whitfield, who stepped in front of the Wildcats' receiver and ran 37 yards for the game-tying touchdown. The last A&M-Commerce interception for a touchdown came when Tay Witherspoon intercepted an East Central pass on Sept. 20, 2003. Whitfield also had a game-high 13 tackles in the defeat.
ACU answered with its longest drive of the afternoon with a 10 play, 62-yard drive that took 4:57 off the clock, ending with the second touchdown of the afternoon by Richardson from six yards out with 6:13 left in the game.
A&M-Commerce answered when Farkes led the Lions on their longest drive of the season with an eight play, 56-yard drive. During the drive, he completed four passes but it was his legs that were instrumental. He scrambled for a first down as the Lions were facing a 3rd and 6 early in the drive. Later in the drive, A&M-Commerce was able to get a first down courtesy of an offsides penalty on the ACU defense. Following a 13-yard completion to Ernest Quander, the Lions bounced back after an illegal formation penalty, to tie the score at 14. On the game-tying touchdown, Farkes found an open Fore for a 20-yard touchdown reception that tied the score.
In the extra period, ACU won the toss and elected to go on defense to set the stage for the game-winning heroics by Cuffee on the first play from scrimmage.
Next, A&M-Commerce will face Eastern New Mexico in its next game, Sept. 19 in Portales. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm (CST) and can be heard live on KETR (88.9 FM). Abilene Christian will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State at home with kickoff scheduled for 6 pm.
