A&M-Commerce Defeats Newman and Falls to Northwest Missouri State on Final Day of Comfort Innvitational

Texas A&M University-Commerce closed out the final day of the Comfort Innvitational, hosted by Northwest Missouri with a 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 win over Newman and a 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 loss to the host Bearcats in Maryville, Mo.

In the win over Newman, the Lions were led by junior Naomi Mays and freshman Morgan Moeller, who had 20 and 11 kills to pace an A&M-Commerce attack that hit at a .232 clip.

Despite hitting at a .244 clip, A&M-Commerce dropped the opening set to the Jets, who hit at a clip .179 and rallied from an early 6-to-2 deficit. In the second set, Mays sparked the Lions attack with six kills and senior Perla Faudoa had a pair of digs and two service aces to even the match at a set apiece.

In the third set, the Lions attack centered on senior Amy Addison, who had six kills and senior Lauren Flynn added six digs. Junior Terra Ousley added a block solo and two kills in the 25-17 win for A&M-Commerce.

The Lions closed out the match in the fourth set with a 25-19 victory. In the win, Moeller became the third A&M-Commerce hitter to record six kills in a set. Mays added four and freshman Rachel Robertson chipped in three more to go along with two service aces. 

Against Northwest Missouri State, the Lions fell in straight sets as the host Bearcats out hit by a .227 to .091 margin. Ousley led the A&M-Commerce attack with seven kills and three Lions had double digit kills including Lauren Flynn with 13, Ashleigh Barnett and Amy Addison each had 10.

The Bearcats' Alex Hanna had a match-high 15 kills and she was joined in double digits by Amber Ryan, who added 10 in the win.

In the opening set, the Lions cut the Bearcats' defense to one, 23-22, on a Rachel Robertson kill. However, NWMSU closed out the opening set with back-to-back kills by Sara Falcone and Ashley Mitchell.

In the second set, the two teams were tied at 21 before the Bearcats' closed the set with four-straight points on a kill by Hanna, an attack error by the Lions and two-straight kills by Falcone.

In the final set, the Lions found themselves trailing 21-16 until a 7-2 run brought A&M-Commerce within one, 23-22. However, the Bearcats bounced back to score two of the next three points en route to the 25-22 victory in the set and to clinch the match.

With the win and the loss on Saturday, A&M-Commerce is now 4-3 on the season. The next match for A&M-Commerce is a doubleheader against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tuesday in Goodwell, Oklahoma. The first of two matches will get underway at 3 p.m.
