Texas A&M University-Commerce built an 8-4 advantage in the fifth and deciding set en route to a fifth-set victory and clinch a 25-21, 25-13, 15-25, 20-25, 15-10 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday night at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
A&M-Commerce (14-14, 4-9 LSC) sophomore Rachel Robertson (pictured; photo by Jared Horn)had a match-high 19 kills and four block solos to pace a Lions' attack that out hit the Javelinas, .172 to .126 in the win. Freshman Jordan Neal added a strong all-around game with 38 assists, eight digs, four kills and two block solos. Plus, senior Terra Ousley had nine kills and a block assist and sophomore Reagan Hayes had a team-best 22 digs.
For the season, the Lions are now 4-1 when matches go to a fifth and deciding set. Also, they extend their home winning streak to three in a row.
A&M-Kingsville (10-15, 4-9 LSC) had two players with double digit kills including Lauryn Lozano and Whitney Roth with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Sondra Cui came off the bench in the second set and had a team-best 29 assists. Lozano also had five service aces for the Javelinas.
The scored remained close through the opening set, with the set tied on its third occasion at 18, Neal and Robertson each pounded a kill for a two-point cushion, 20-18, by the Lions. Robertson would add two more kills to put the Lions up by a set.
In the second set, A&M-Commerce took advantage of an A&M-Kingsville attack that had 12 attack errors and hit -.028. Robertson, Ousley and senior Naomi Mays combined for six Lions' kills as they hit .333 to take a two-set advantage.
The Javelinas came back to win the third and fourth sets to force a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Lions took an early 8-4 lead. The seventh point came on a one-handed, opposite-hand kill by Robertson and the eighth point came on a convincing kill from sophomore Morgan Moeller, who had three kills in the deciding set. With a 10-6 lead, the Javelinas called timeout to cut the deficit to one, 10-9 which prompted an A&M-Commerce timeout. This time, the momentum went back to the home team. The Lions took the match with two more kills from Robertson and two from freshman Kayla Bond.
Next, A&M-Commerce closes out the regular season with Senior Day on Saturday when they host Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. at the A&M-Commerce Field House. The match time has been rescheduled from the originally published time of 2 p.m.
