The University of Incarnate Word posted a 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce on Saturday morning at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
The win by the Cardinals advanced the LSC newcomer into next weekend's Lone Star Conference Tournament in Canyon, Texas. Also, with the win, UIW raises its record to 9-14 overall and 6-8 in the LSC.
The loss ends the season for the Lions, who end the 2010 campaign with a 14-15 overall mark and a 4-10 record in the LSC.
It also marked the end of the career for A&M-Commerce seniors Naomi Mays, Rachael Shelton and Terra Ousley, who have all had a significant impact on the Lions' volleyball program throughout their careers.
In the match, the score was tied on seven-different occasions. With the set tied at 17, The Cardinals built a four-point cushion for a 21-17 lead. The lead was enough as UIW took the opening set by a 25-21 margin. The Cardinals' Beth Soukup had five of her 15 match-high kills en route to a double double with five of her 13 digs.
Both teams posted high hitting percentages but it was eight attack errors that hindered the Lions. UIW out hit A&M-Commerce by a .241 to .176 margin. Freshman Kayla Bond and sophomore Rachel Robertson each had four kills for the Lions and Soukup added six to pace the Cardinals.
The third and final set saw the visitors build a quick 7-3 lead, which prompted a timeout by the Lions. A&M-Commerce answered and managed a 6-1 spurt to take a 9-8 lead. This time, it forced the Incarnate Word coaches to call timeout. The Cardinals and Lions remained close for the rest of the set. After the Lions had took a three-point lead, 21-18, UIW came back with four-consecutive points to take a slight 22-21 lead. However, no lead remained safe until Soukup closed the match with two-straight kills for the decisive margin, 26-24.
