COMMERCE, Texas -- Rachel Robertson posted a season-high 21 kills and a .441 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough as A&M-Commerce falls to 20th-ranked Angelo State 11-25, 17-25, 25-23, 18-25 at the Field House.
Robertson's 21-kill effort ended up being one shy of her career-best 22 at Incarnate Word last October. She had just six errors on 34 attempts for a .441 hitting percentage and a block as well. Freshman Ezon Onditi posted the best game of her young A&M-Commerce career, recording nine kills, a .333 hitting percentage, six digs, a service ace and a solo block.
Kayla Bond and Breanne Snyder each added eight kills for the Lions, with Snyder leading A&M-Commerce with a team-best 13 digs defensively and a block. Bond had three kills and three blocks as well, with Jordan Neal dishing out 44 assists to complement her three kills and two blocks.
Early in the match, Angelo State showed why they were ranked in the nation's top-20, dominating the first two sets against A&M-Commerce. The Rambelles breezed in set one 25-11, then took a comfortable 25-17 decision in set two as the Lions were never a serious threat through the first two sets.
But whatever was said in the Lion locker room at intermission seemed to have the desired affect as A&M-Commerce matched Angelo State in the back half of the match. Set three proved to be the most competitive as the Lions and Rambelles combined for eight ties and four lead changes. The Lions built a five-point cushion at 19-14 late in the set, but slowly saw Angelo State fight back into it, puling to within one at 24-23. But a kill from Bond sealed the victory and gave A&M-Commerce new life.
Set four began in similar fashion as the third as the two teams battled to six ties and three lead changes early. But with the set tied at 15, Angelo State made its final push, stringing together a 10-3 run to seal the match and keep their unbeaten mark intact at 13-0.
The Rambelles were led by 13 kills from Celeste Bonter and 12 from Maddie Huth, who had no hitting errors on 16 attempts for an impressive .750 hitting percentage. Alex Woolsey posted a double-double for Angelo State, finishing with 42 assists and 10 digs.
After playing seven matches in the span of 10 days, the Lions will have some time off to regroup before another challenging week of Lone Star Conference action. A&M-Commerce returns to the court hosting Tarleton State at the Field House on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Opening serve against the TexAnns is set for 7 p.m.
