AUSTIN, Texas – A&M-Commerce dug itself a substantial hole at halftime against St. Edward's and was unable to claw completely out, falling to the Hilltoppers 75-70 in the 2012-13 season opener at the St. Edward's Shootout.

Four Lions finished in double figures on the evening, led by a double-double by Andrew Davis, who posted 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting with 11 rebounds. Tyrie Wooten and Stefon Carson each finished with 11 points in their Lion debuts with Kenny Brown adding 10 points with six rebounds.

Devondrick Walker, Quince Jackson and Donavon Gage each posted seven points while Jason Smith chipped in four point and seven rebounds as well.

A&M-Commerce raced out to the early lead in its season debut, building a 13-4 lead through the first six minutes of play as five different Lions scored during the run. But leading 19-18 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, St. Edward's went on a run of its own, outscoring the Lions 30-17 over the final nine and half minutes to take a 48-36 lead into halftime.

St. Edward's would extend its lead to 16 at 52-36 early in the second half and appeared on the brink of putting A&M-Commerce away. But the Lions weren't going away with out a fight. Trailing 62-50, the Lions put together a 14-4 run, pulling to within two at 66-64 with 6:17 remaining.

But that was as close as A&M-Commerce would come to knocking off the host Hilltoppers as St. Edward's closed out the final six minutes outscoring the Lions 9-6 down the stretch to seal the 75-70 victory on opening night.

St. Edward's was led by 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocks from Harley Nussman while Jeff Campbell added 15 points and eight boards to pace the Hilltoppers to victory. St. Edward's shot 40.3 percent from the floor compared to 41.8 percent from the field for A&M-Commerce but 24 turnovers did in A&M-Commerce as the Lions had nearly 20 fewer shots from the floor on the evening.

The Lions look to rebound Saturday afternoon, facing UT-Permian Basin in the early game of the St. Edward's Shootout. The Falcons took Lone Star Conference opponent Incarnate Word to the wire, falling to the Cardinals 80-77 in the early game Friday.
