COMMERCE, Texas – A&M-Commerce notched a pair of goals less than four minutes apart midway through the opening half, then controlled the tempo of the game down the stretch to earn a 2-0 victory over the Pioneers. The Lions snap a two-game skid, improving to 6-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
"It was a huge win," said head coach Neil Piper. "When you have a four game home stand you lose the first two, it can be disheartening. I wish we would have scored more goals, because I felt the team deserved it, but at the end of the day, in this conference, you're happy with the win."
The Lions dominated the Pioneers on the stat sheet, outshooting Texas Woman's 23-6 on the night as kept the ball on its half of the field the majority of the evening.
A&M-Commerce struck first in the 18th minute when Savannah Henderson took a long feed from Anitra Wright and beat the Pioneer goalkeeper, giving the Lions that all-important first goal. Less than four minutes later, A&M-Commerce struck again as Brionna Minde gave a great pass to Jade Bell at the top of the penalty area who was able to strike it into the corner of the net to put the Lions on top 2-0.
But A&M-Commerce wasn't content with the 2-0 lead as the Lions continued to take shots. Henderson, who finished with eight shots on the night, nearly added her second goal of the night in the waning seconds of the first half as her strike from 40 yards out took a big bounce just over the crossbar.
In the second half, A&M-Commerce generated more chances but were unable to find the back of the net. Samantha Huston had three shots in the second half, including a pair that sailed just over the crossbar, while Catie Hyde and Vicky Back also had three attempts in addition to shutting down the Pioneer offensive attack.
Freshman goalkeeper Callie Ballard recorded four saves on the night, logging her fourth shutout of the season. In addition to allowing the Pioneer offensive attack to just six shots, A&M-Commerce's defense also held Texas Woman's to just four shots on goal and played aggressive all night, registering nine corner kicks to just one for the Pioneers.
A&M-Commerce closes out the four game homestand this Saturday as the Lions take a break from Lone Star Conference play to welcome Oklahoma Christian to Commerce. Opening kick against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. at Lion Soccer Field.
