COMMERCE – In front of a crowd of 643 at the Lion Soccer Field on Sunday night, the East Texas A&M University soccer team narrowly fell 2-0 to the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Sooners are now 2-0 on the season with a 9-0 win over Northwestern State at home last Wednesday and the 2-0 win over the Lions on Sunday night. The Lady Demons and East Texas A&M were picked 1-2 in the preseason Southland Conference poll.
The loss drops the Lions to 1-1 on the season and East Texas A&M lost its home opener for the first time since 2022. In the match, the Lions were outshot 26-5, with no shots in the second half.
Emmy Finlinson (Eagle Mountain, Utah) made nine saves in goal.
Allyson Reed (Cleburne) had two shots.
The Sooners took the lead in the 17
th minute on a goal by Sophie Morrin assisted by Drue Legan, who served up a long header, and it was drilled in by Morrin.
The second goal of the match was scored by Kennedy Kaiser in the 43
rd minute for Oklahoma. Brenna Hallam had the assist on the goal that was kicked in by Kaiser.
As part of the Fall Kickoff, the announced attendance on Sunday night was 643, which is the highest attendance at a home match since 2022.
