KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Lions recorded their second sweep in as many nights with a three nothing win over A&M-Kingsville. The win splits the season series between the squads, with each team winning on the road.
This also marks the Lions' 20th win of the season and their third straight. It is the first time since the 2000-02 seasons that Lion Volleyball program has recorded at least back-to-back 20-win seasons.
A&M-Commerce used a balanced attack and limited their errors to get the win.
Breanne Snyder led the attack for the Lions with 14 kills and zero errors on 20 attacks for a .700 hitting percentage.
Ezon Onditi got her second straight start and posted 12 kills compared to just two errors.
Kayla Bond and
Amy Davault both recorded 10 kills on the night and hit over .500. The Lions hit .434 as a team.
Jordan Neal recorded another 40 plus assist night with 42 helpers. That is now 11 straight games for the Joshua native with at least 40 assists.
The teams split the first 14 points coming out of the gate. The Lions took a 12-8 lead after back-to-back errors from the Javelinas. A&M-Commerce stretched the lead to 22-16 after a kill from Snyder. After a two point run from Kingsville, Onditi got the final point for the Lions on a kill, assisted by Neal.
With the score 4-2 in set two the Lions scored seven straight, with contributions from everyone, to make the lead 11-2 early on. Kingsville was not done though. The Javelinas battled back to eventually tie the set at 15 after a 6-2 run. A&M-Commerce put the clamps down after that, outscoring the Javelinas 10-4 to close the set with another 25-19 win.
Like set one the opening points were back and forth between the two sides. The Lions took a 12-8 lead off two straight kills from Snyder. A kill from
Kayla Bond made the lead 17-11 for the visitors. The lead got to as many as eight at 20-12 after an attack error from Kingsville. The Javelinas tried to get a rally going but ran out of time and the Lions clinched the win after a service from Sarah Fountain.
The Lions return home for the final week of the 2013 regular season. There is a full slate of games for the Lions with matches on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Tarleton State visits The Field House on Tuesday with Eastern New Mexico and West Texas coming in next weekend.
