LIONS FALL TO MUSTANGS ON PENALTY KICKS IN LSC SEMIFINALS

SAN ANGELO, Texas – A&M-Commerce fell to Midwestern State 3-1 on penalties kicks in the Semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in San Angelo. The teams played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer before going to penalty kicks. The Lions now await their fate to see if their season continues and receive an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament.

Both teams had to battle cold temperatures, on and off rain and windy conditions for a spot in the LSC Championship.

Midwestern State scored on three of their four kicks and Lions scored once, put one over the net and Kallie Essary recorded two saves to get the Mustangs to the LSC Championship match on Sunday.

Jade Bell was stopped by Essary, Anitra Wright made her kick to tie the score at 1-1. Savannah Henderson was then stopped by Essary after MSU took at 2-1 lead. After another Midwestern State conversion, Brionna Minde needed to score on her attempt to extend the round. Minde had Essary guessing wrong but put the ball over the net to give the win to Mustangs, 3-1.

A&M-Commerce controlled the possession and the scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. The Lions were able to generate corner kicks throughout the half but could not convert any of the six corners. The best chance came in ? minute when Savannah Henderson played in a corner when Minde and Catie Hyde both went up for the header but they were turned away by Essary.

The Mustangs had some chances to take the lead but Callie Ballard turned them all away. Midwestern State had 15 shots in the second half and over times but could not get any past Ballard.

The second half saw the Mustangs start getting more chances have those chances be quality ones. Midwestern State saw multiple corners go sailing through the box without anyone touching it. The best chance for the Mustangs came when Tatyanny Griffiths hit the crossbar in the 48th minute.

Both sides were trying to formulate attacks and counter-attacks in the closing minutes but neither side was able to get a late winner.

Midwestern State controlled the ball and shot count in the first overtime period. The Mustangs were able to keep the pressure on the Lion backline but Vicky Back, Anitra Wright, Lauren Heron and Hyde were up to the challenge on the back end.

In the second overtime period the two sides battled for control in the midfield early on. Both teams had chances to win the game but came up empty. The Mustangs almost had the winner when Kensli Pounds got a turnover off a goal kick by the Lions and put it just over the bar. The Midwestern State fans started celebrating because that ball looked like it when but it hit the top of the net over the bar.

The shutout for Callie Ballard gives her eight on the season and moves her into fourth place by herself on the Lions single season shutout list.

The Lions now must wait and see if their season continues with an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament. That announcement is set to come early next week.
