A&M-COMMERCE STUMBLES AGAINST DALLAS BAPTIST, 3-1, IN HOME OPENER

– The Patriots of Dallas Baptist forced 34 errors by the Lions and fended off match point in the first set five times to give the Lions their first loss of the 2013 season.

The Lions had a balanced attack with four players in double figures with Amy Davault leading the way with 18 kills. Kayla Bond had 14, Breanne Snyder had 13 and Caira Holmes added 12 of her own. However the Lions hit .220 as a team and had 25 errors that proved to closely in the end. Jordan Neal was just one assist her career high with 64 on the night.

A&M-Commerce lead entire first set until the final two points when Dallas Baptist fended off five set points at 24-22, 24-23, 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26. DBU tied the game at 27 with a kill from Tiara Iwegbu. The Lions then had two attacking errors by Holmes and Davult to end, 29-27, in favor of the visiting Patriots.

Four straight kills by the Patriots gave them a quick early lead in the second set. The Lions then battled back to take a 7-5 lead with a kill from Holmes. Dallas Baptist took the lead back at 9-8 and never relinquished it and ended the set on a kill from Tadam Mergener at 25-21.

In set number three Lions started off well winning four of the first points. Dallas Baptist then tied the score six times before taking an 11-10 lead after an attack error from Snyder. The Patriots then toke a 16-12 lead, their largest of the set. That is when the Lions started to make their run. A kill from Davault tied the game at 19, then a kill from Holmes tied the set again at 20. The Lions took the lead for good after a kill by Bond to make it 22-21. A block by Bond and Davault closed out the game for the Lions at 25-22.

The fourth set the Lions and Patriots were tied five times early before the Lions took a two point 10-8. The Lions kept the lead until a nine to nothing run to make it 20-14 in favor of DBU. Four attack errors by the Lions fueled the run for the Patriots. The Lions could not recover from that point and did not get any closer than five before falling 25-19 and the match three sets to one.

The Lions have a couple days off before heading to Lubbock, Texas for the 2013 Windmark Insurance Heartland / Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament hosted by Lubbock Christian University. On Friday the Lions face the Dustdevils of Texas A&M-International and host Lubbock Christian. On Saturday the Lions face St. Mary's and the Falcons of UT-Permian Basin. A&M-Commerce returns to the Field House in nine days when they face Henderson State on the 19th of September at 7:00 p.m.
