LUBBOCK, Texas – Lions sweep first day against A&M-International and the host Lubbock Christian. The Lions only dropped one game over the two games.
In set one against the Lions got out to a 8-3 lead early and maintained that lead through the mid point of set number one. The Dustdevils of A&M-I went on a five to one run to take a 17-14 lead thanks too four straight errors by the Lions. The Lions battled back to take a 20-18 lead but were unable to hold it and the Dustdevils tied the set twice at 22 and 24 all then won it 27-25.
The second set was like the first in how the Lions got an early then the Dustdevils eventually tied the game up at 10 all. After an attack error by A&M-I to give the Lions the 11-10 lead, A&M-Commerce would not look back for the rest of the set and taking a 25-22 win in set number two.
The Lions were able to get out to a lead early and was able to starch the lead to as many as six at 18-12 thanks to back-to-back kills from Taryn Driver. A&M-International never really challenged from then on and the Lions took set number three, 25-17.
Set four saw the Lions get out to a quick 3-0 nothing lead and never looking back. The Lions close the set on an 11 to two run, including a seven point run with Michaela Spicer on serve, to win 25-12.
Amy Davault led the Lions with 13 kills and added 14 digs. Kayla Bond and Breanna Snyder had 12 kills each and Taryn Driver had 10 of her own. Jordan Neal dished out 48 assists, Davualt had two a Li'I Etimani recorded one in her first action of the season.
In the second game of the day the Lions swept the hosts, Lubbock Christian. The Lions only had 13 attack errors over the three sets compared to the 24 for LCU.
The Chaps got out to a 4-0 lead early in set number one and held the lead until late in the set at 22-21. The Lions tied the set on an error from the Chaps followed another error to the Lions lead. Kills by Jordan Neal and Holmes closed out the set for the Lions at 25-22.
In set two the Lions only trailed for one point then tied the set at seven off a kill from Driver. The Lions extended the lead to as many as five once and four three other times before winning the set, 25-20.
The third set start off with back and forth action before the Lions took a three-point lead at 15-12. The Lions were then able to string some points together to take a eight-point lead at 23-15 off a kill by Davault. The Lions closed out the sweep with a kill from Bond to make it 25-18 in set number three.
Kayla Bond led the way for the Lions with 10 kills against Lubbock Christian. Ciara Holmes added nine more on the day. Jordan Neal had 33 of the 35 assist for the Lions. The main story was the 24 to 13 advantage the Lions had in attack errors in the match.
The Lions continue with the tournament in Lubbock tomorrow with matches against St. Mary's at 11 a.m. (time change) and then against UT-Permian Basin (time change) at 1:00 p.m. The Lions then open up Lone Star Conference play on the road against Texas Woman's on Tuesday September 17.
