A&M-COMMERCE OUTLASTS MIDWESTERN STATE FOR 3-0 ROAD SWEEP

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A&M-Commerce got out early and used timely defense and transition to fend off Midwestern State in sets two and three to complete a perfect 2-0 road trip. The Lions now have won four in a row against the Mustangs and have a week off before A&M-Kingsville comes to The Field House next Saturday October 5th.

The Lion defense recorded eight total blocks and recorded 62 digs while only allowing the Mustang offense to hit .024 for the match. Seven Mustangs had a negative hitting percentage.

The offense started off hot for the Lions and capitalized on some long rallies to take seven of the first nine points. The service game of the Lions had the Mustang defense scrambling, which led to them not being able to pass and get into their offense. Midwestern had 11 attack errors and 17 total errors in the first game. The Lions closed the set on an 11-0 run to take the first set 25-7.

Amy Davault had four kills to lead the offense. Ciara Holmes and Kayla Bond both registered two kills. The Mustangs struggled hitting, posting a -.296 clip with only three kills.

The second set followed the second set from the night before against Cameron with the Lions keeping the Mustangs around with errors and missed opportunities. The Lions had eight attack errors and 13 total errors, which kept the score close. The set was close throughout with neither side able to get some distance between themselves. There were nine ties and 10 lead changes in the second set. Taryn Driver got the final two kills for the Lions for the 25-23 set win.

Davault led the offense with six kills. Holmes added four and Driver, Kala Bond each added three in set to. Neal assisted 14 of the 16 Lion kills. The Mustangs improved on the offensive end but still hit under .073

Like in the first set the Lions jumped out quick and scored five quick points for a 5-2 lead. Davault had two of those. Errors by Midwestern kept the Lions in the lead in the middle stages including a run of four straight that gave the Lions a 13-8 lead. However, the Mustangs were not done in trying to extend the match. MSU eventually tied the match at 16 all then took the lead at 17-16 after a kill from Marija Jovanovic. The largest lead from here to end was not larger than two. After six more ties, an error from Midwestern gave A&M-Commerce match point at 24-23 and MSU called a timeout. Out of the time out the Mustangs tied it but then the Lions scored two straight to take the set 26-24 and secure the sweep.

Amy Davault led the offense with 16 kills to just one error and added 13 digs, for her seventh double-double on the year and second in as many games. Kayla Bond had nine and added 12 digs. Ciara Holmes recorded six kills, one solo block and three block assists. Breanne Snyder added five and Taryn Driver had four on the night for the Lions. Jordan Neal added another 35 assists for 83 total over the weekend.

The Lions will now have a week to prepare for A&M-Kingsville on Saturday and Angelo State comes to The Field House on October 9 at 7:00 p.m.
