Lions Prepare for Pair of LSC Rivals

COMMERCE, TEXAS – The A&M-Commerce volleyball team has a pair of conference home matches this weekend. On Friday, October 2 Lone Star Conference leader West Texas A&M (13-3, 5-0 LSC) comes to the Lion Field House. Eastern New Mexico (7-6, 2-3) comes to town on Saturday, October 4 at 2 p.m.
 
The Lions are looking to snap a three match skid. A&M-Commerce fell on Tuesday at Angelo State losing in three sets. This season the Lions have been led by Amy Davault who has racked up 231 kills which leads the LSC. Davault ranks second in the conference in kills per set with 3.98. Courtney Tate currently leads the LSC in assists with 561. The Lions are led defensively by Delanee Clark who has 31 blocks and Ashley Mireles who has a team-high 263 digs.
 
West Texas A&M:
 
West Texas A&M has won five matches in a row. In the latest poll they received 77 national votes. The Lady Buffs have won 29 LSC conference matches in-a-row a streak that started in 2012. Recently the Lady Buffs knocked off LSC foes Tarleton State and Angelo State at home and won a road non-conference match at Wayland Baptist.
 
The Lady Buffs are led by senior outside hitter Lauren Bevan who leads the Lone Star Conference in kills per set averaging 4.33 and has racked up 225 this season. Senior setter Kameryn Hays has tallied 387 assists and is averaging 7.30 a set. Defensively West Texas A&M is led by three very talented middle blockers red shirt junior Jessica Johnson, sophomore Haley Cori and red shirt sophomore Leah Mayer.  Johnson has a team high 58 blocks and is averaging 1.14 blocks per set. Haley has added 51 total blocks and Mayer has contributed 45 blocks in in 43 sets played an average of 1.05 blocks per set.
 
West Texas A&M has dominated the series as of late winning nine consecutive matches over A&M-Commerce and the Lady Buffs lead the overall series 36-12.
 
Eastern New Mexico:
 
Eastern New Mexico is currently on a two match win streak including an impressive 3-0 win at home against LSC rival Tarleton State and another 3-0 home win over the University of The Southwest. On Friday, October 3 the Zias travel to Denton, Texas for a match against conference rival Texas Woman's University.
 
The Zias are led by a pair of senior setters Karra Day and Kennedi Canto both have over 200 assists. Canto has 233 and is averaging 4.85 assists per set and Day has averaged 4.35 assists per set and has racked up 209 assists. Sophomore right side Lauren Frye has a team-high 151 kills. Defensively the Zias are led by sophomore libero Lindsey Boast who is averaging 4.17 digs per set, and senior middle blocker Aqatha Gibbons who has tallied 55 total blocks.
 
The Lions have controlled the series as of late winning 11 of the last 12 matches against the Zias and lead the overall series 28-18.
 
First serve on Friday, October 3 is scheduled for 7p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $5 to those 13 and above. For children 12 and under and any student with a current ID, admission is free.
