COMMERCE, TEXAS – The A&M-Commerce Volleyball team went into tonight's match looking to put an end to West Texas A&M's 29 conference match win streak. The Lions were out hit .138 percent compared to .320 for the Lady Buffs and fell in three sets.
With the Lions trailing 18-15 in the first set Sydney Reyes had back-to-back big plays first a kill and then Reyes had an impressive dig that eventually led to an Amy Davault and Delanee Clark block to make the score 18-17. The Lady Buffs would rattle off eight of the next 10 points to win the set.
In the second set West Texas A&M led from start to finish winning 25-13. The Lady Buffs had a hitting percentage of .188 compared to the Lions who hit -.049. Davault picked up four of her 16 kills in the second set and Veronika Baric added two kills.
The third set was a nail-biter trailing 21-17 the Lions went on a 3-0 run behind the service of Chassidy Hill. Davault came up big on back-to-back plays with a kill and then a block. A&M-Commerce would cut into the lead making the score 21-20. Davault's kill of the night came with A&M-Commerce trailing 24-22 Davault made a diving play that dropped in front of two West Texas A&M players to make the score 24-23. However, the Lady Buffs would take the next point and win the match.
With the win West Texas A&M (14-3, LSC 6-0) won its 30th consecutive Lone Star Conference match. The Lady Buffs were led tonight by Lauren Bevan who notched a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Kaymeryn Hays had a team high 20 assists and Kyli Schulz added 17 assists. Defensively West Texas A&M had three girls with four blocks each Jessica Johnson, Lexi Davis and Cori Haley.
A&M-Commerce (3-13, LSC 1-6) was led tonight by Davault who had a match-high 16 kills and Courtney Tate who had a match-high 30 assists. Defensively Ashley Mireles led the Lions with 13 digs.
The Lions have a quick turnaround with another match on Saturday, October 3 at 2 p.m. against conference rival Eastern New Mexico. Tickets will be available at the door for $5. Admission is free for kids 12 and under and any student with a current ID.
