Commerce, Texas – A&M-Commerce Volleyball (5-21, 3-11 LSC) looked to send their lone senior
Amy Davault out in winning fashion on senior night. Despite Devault's stellar performance, registering 19 kills and 11 digs for her second consecutive double-double, the Lions were unable to knock off Texas A&M-Kingsville (17-10, 6-7 LSC), falling 3-1.
Â
The Lions fell behind early in the first set 6-3 when a
Taryn Driver kill sparked a 3-0 A&M-Commerce run that was capped off by a
Delanee Clark and Chassidy Hill block to tie the match at six. However, a late 6-0 run by the Javelinas propelled Kingsville to a 25-14 set one win.
Â
The second set was a very closely played match and featured 11 ties and five different lead changes. Davault and Driver gave the Lions a 12-9 lead with back-to-back kills. With A&M-Commerce trailing late in the match 20-19, Driver and Davault would again provide back-to- back kills to give the Lions a 21-20 lead. However, A&M-Commerce could not hold off the Javelinas, falling 25-23.
Â
Davault took over in the third set recording eight kills out of her 19 total on the night. A
Sydney Reyes and
Shantel Norton block followed by an ace by
Ashley Mireles gave the Lions a 14-8 lead. The Javelinas were able to pull within four points by bringing the score to 24-20, but Davault would slam the door shut with a game-clinching kill.
Â
The Javelinas jumped all over the Lions in the fourth set, scoring 13 of the first 15 points en route to a set four win. Kingsville registered a sideout percentage of 91% in the set and committed just two attack errors.
Â
Texas A&M-Kingsville had two girls pick up double-doubles against the Lions. Kelsey Washington led the way with a team-high 15 kills and 11 digs. Krystal Faison contributed 12 kills and 12 digs. Casey Klobedans assisted on a majority of the kills picking up a match-high 45 assists. Defensively, the Javelinas were led by a pair of middle blockers, as Stephanie Johns led the way with five total blocks and Anyssa Matheson added four blocks for Kingsville.
Â
Courtney Tate led the charge, racking up 34 assists and recording two total blocks. Defensively, the Lions relied on both Mireles and Lacy Jessup. Jessup picked up a team-high 19 digs and Mireles added 18. Driver led the team with 3 total blocks.
