WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – The Lions pulled off a huge 2-1 overtime victory and advanced to 7-4 in Wichita Falls, becoming the first team to beat the previously undefeated Midwestern State Mustangs (5-1-5) in 2014.
Â
Savannah Henderson scored both Lions goals, her ninth and tenth of the season. Her first came after getting decked at the top of the MSU box, which granted her a free kick. Henderson wound up, and blasted one past freshman keeper Courtney Burnette (24'), giving the Lions the 1-0 lead. Later, in overtime, Henderson was the beneficiary of a well placed pass from fellow-forward
Jade Bell, which she sailed to the left side of the net, past the keeper (98'). That was Bell's sixth assist on the season, which leads the LSC in that category.
Â
The Mustangs goal which set the game upon the path of overtime was similar to Henderson's first. Near the beginning of the second half, physicality ensued in front of the Lions' net, which led officials to grant MSU's Morgan Hannan a penalty kick (56'). Her stutter step froze keeper
Courtnie Northern, and knotted things up for the remainder of regulation.
Â
Northern made six saves on the afternoon, some of which were high degree-of-difficulty, highlight reel plays. She now has 71 saves on the year for a .888 save percentage.
Â
"We went out, played hard, and got the win," said head coah
Neil Piper, "Courtnie played hard and really kept us in the game."
Â
The Lone Star Conference standings made quite a shift following Sunday's action. Midwestern State fell to dead last in the conference with a 0-1-2 record against LSC opponents. Meanwhile, the Lions rise to second in the conference with a 2-2 record, holding the goal-differential advantage on Eastern New Mexico. Only Angelo State sits above A&M-Commerce, with a 2-0-1 conference record following a win against
Â
In just 12 days, the Lions will draw the Mustangs again, this time at home in Commerce. Before that though, A&M-Commerce will return home with the next three days to recuperate and prepare for the only LSC opponent they have yet to face, the No. 8 ranked team in the region, the Texas Woman's University Pioneers (7-2-1). Â That game is scheduled for Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m.
