Commerce, Texas – The Lone Star Conference Champions and No. 1 seed Lions open the LSC playoffs with No. 4 seed Tarleton State Saturday, November 8 at 4 p.m. in Memorial Stadium as A&M-Commerce continues to build on the program's best season since 1990.
The Lions, who have already captured the program's 21st LSC regular season championship, look to repeat the feat as the LSC Playoff Champion – an accomplishment surely to increase on what already is an impressive NCAA playoff resume.
1st and 10- A&M-Commerce is coming off a 91-13 rout of McMurry in its last game ... The Lions were the only team at any level in the NCAA to score over 90 points after beating ETBU 98-20, in the opening game of the season, but have now accomplished the feat twice.
- The Lions enter the game at 285-209-12 in 506 LSC games.
- At 6-1 in LSC play, the Lions are the outright conference champions for the 15th time ... The 21st overall and first since 1990 -- the first under the name of A&M-Commerce.
- The Lions dropped out of the AFCA Top 25 after being ranked for two weeks ... The Lions entered the poll at No. 23 then spent one week at No. 22 ... It was first time since 2001 the Lions had been ranked during the season.
- The Lions stayed the NCAA's best scoring offense averaging 54.2 points per game ... No team at the FBS or FCS level average more points per game than the Lions ... Only one NCAA, a DIII team averages more points than A&M-Commerce.
- A&M-Commerce is also ranked third in passing offense at 370.0 yards per game and fourth in total offense at 528.6 yards per game ... On the defensive side, the team leads the NCAA in team tackles for a loss and in punt blocks ...
Saul Martinez leads the NCAA in field goals per game and is fifth in points per game.
- In the McMurry game, Martinez made all 13 of his PATs setting a new LSC and A&M-Commerce record for attempts and makes ...
Tre'von Taylor recorded 5.5 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks ... He broke the school record for sacks and matched the record for TFL.
- In the win over ETBU, the Lions shattered NCAA, LSC and school records ... The 986 yards of total offense set a new NCAA record.
- Following the ETBU game, the Lions were featured on ESPN's SportsCenter, College GameDay, NBC Sports, Fox Sports1 and numerous local and regional news outlets.
- The Lions experienced the biggest turnaround by a collegiate team in the state of Texas after their 7-5 season in 2013.
About the Series against the Texans- The two teams meet for 23rd time tied at an even 11-11 in the all-time record ... A&M-Commerce is 6-5 in home games against the Texans counting the 53-25 win back on October 4 this season.
- The Lions routed the Texans behind the play of back up quarterback
Deric Davis who after his performance was named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week ... Davis completed 24 of his 32 passes for 324 yards and two TDs .
- The Lions have won the last two games dating back to the 2013 22-20 win that saw
Harrison Stewart QB the Lions to a win.
- In two seasons under the current staff, three different QBs will have started in the backfield for A&M-Commerce.
- The Texans have won 11 of the last 14 meetings in the series including a streak of seven games from 1997 to 2005.
About Tarleton State- The Texans enter the game after a heartbreaking 34-31 loss to Angelo State that snapped a three-game winning streak -- their last loss came at the hands of the Lions.
- Of the Texans four losses, three of them have come by less than 10 points including the ASU loss ... Florida Tech topped Tarleton State 37-31 and then ranked No. 18 Midwestern State beat the Texans 27-23.
- Collin Strahan leads the team with 599 rushing yards on 107 attempts for a 74.8 average ... Zach Henshaw has carried the ball 93 times for 480 yards for an 60.0 average per game ... Strahan also leads the team completing 130 of his 212 pass attempts for an average of 207.4 yards per game ... He has also thrown three INTs and 15 TDs on the season ... Le'Nard Meyers has hauled in 46 catches for 69.0 yards per game and seven TDs, while Bubba Tandy has 32 catches for an average of 65.5 yards per game.
