Lions Win Stunner in Double OT

Back Scores First of 2014, Knocks Off DBU

Box Score DALLAS, TEXAS – The Lions soccer team pulled off their second big upset in a row, beating the No 5. ranked team in the South Central region, the Dallas Baptist University Patriots 2-1. The Lions move to 4-1, despite being decisively out-shot 36-13.

Forward Jade Bell (67') scored the first goal of the game, beating a defender to the ball on the left of goalkeeper Kerry Edwards before shooting it low and away into the opposite corner. She now has three on the season for eight points (3G, 2A). Edwards was on a shutout streak heading into Tuesday's game, but had that snapped at 280 minutes upon Bell's goal.

With less than a minute to go in regulation, DBU forward Emilie MacDonald beat a defender and scored what appeared to be her second goal of the season. However, the officials on the field convened and determined it to be an own-goal against A&M-Commerce.

In double overtime, sophomore forward Vicky Back (103') scored her first goal of the season at the perfect time, earning the game-winner off a corner from Jade Bell.

The Patriots controlled the pace of the game and limited the Lions offense, not allowing a single shot on goal in the first half of the game. Meanwhile, play spent the majority of the time in the Lions' end, with DBU tallying 15 shots on the half.

A&M-Commerce keeper Courtnie Northern put together another heroic performance, stopping thirteen of the fourteen shots she faced, a season-high.

With this win, the Lions move to 8-2 all-time against DBU. The Patriots, who fall to 2-2-1, will try and put this one behind them, as they travel to Canyon, Texas to take on the Lions' LSU rival West Texas A&M.

The Lions will finally return home after ten days on the road to host the No. 18 ranked team in the nation, the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers. St Edward's is the team that knocked the Lions out of the NCAA tournament in 2013, so A&M-Commerce will have the opportunity to exact revenge. That contest is scheduled for Friday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m.
