Lions Open 2014 Volleyball Season after Splitting Two Matches
 
Canyon, Texas – On the opening day of the 2014 volleyball season, A&M- Commerce split a pair of matches with a 3-1 loss to New Mexico Highlands and a 3-0 sweep of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs at the Britkare Lady Buff Classic  Friday afternoon.
 
Match One
 The Lions got off to a fast start scoring four unanswered points to start the first set  that included two kills by Veronika Baric.
 
New Mexico Highlands was able to tie the score 5-5 and went on a run which the Lions would never recover from taking set one 25-17.
 
In set two, the Lions had a .235 hitting percentage and 14 team kills. Amy Davault led the way with five kills, and Courtney Tate had 11 assists. The Lions jumped out to a 15-5 lead en route to a  25-16 set two win tying the match 1-1.
 
In the third set, A&M-Commerce fell behind early and were never able to recover losing the set 25-19.
 
To start the fourth set the Lions dug themselves hole trailing New Mexico Highland 20-13. The Lions were able to claw back into the set getting it as close as 21-23. However, it was not enough as A&M Commerce lost the set 25-23, and losing the match 3-1.
 
Two Lion standouts for the first match were Courtney Tate who had 33 assists, and Baric, who had a .400 hitting percent with 13 kills on 25 attempts.  Taryn Driver controlled the net with six total blocks, five block assists and one solo block.
 
Match Two
 
In the first set, A&M-Commerce and UC Colorado Springs went back and forth with 15 ties and eight lead changes. Veronika Baric had a huge kill in the set that gave the Lions a 19-16 lead that they would never give up.
 
The Lions jumped out to a quick lead to start the second set scoring eight of the first 10 points taking an 8-2 lead. UCCS climbed back into the match getting it as close as 15-13 eventually pulling within one point at 24-23. However, the Lions held on and took set two 25-23.
 
The third set started just like the second set with A&M-Commerce jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead. UCCS could not mount a comeback as the Lions clinched the set and the match with a 25-22 win.
 Amy Davault led the team with 14 kills, and Courtney Tate had a team high 28 assists.  Delanee Clark had six kills on nine attempts with no errors for a .667 hitting percentage.
 
A&M-Commerce returns to the court Saturday with matches at 9:30 a.m. against Colorado Mesa and at 2:30 p.m. against Regis.
