Commerce, Texas –
Darrell Williams recorded his fourth consecutive 20 point game with a game-high 25 points to lead all scorers as A&M-Commerce reeled off its 10th win in the last 11 games with a decisive 86-53 win over Cameron in the Field House in the Lions Lone Star Conference home opener Wednesday night.
It was all A&M-Commerce all night as the Lions never trailed in the game and saw the score tied for only the one minute and five seconds of play before Williams knocked down a jumper in the paint. Midway through the first half, the Lions narrowly led 27-24, but closed the final 9:36 with a 23-3 run to take a 23-point lead, 50-27, into the intermission. The Lions never let off the gas pedal in the second half ending the game with a 35-point win, 86-51.
Cameron, who entered the game tied for second in the NCAA with a 53.2 percent field goal percentage, was limited by the relentless Lion defense to 29 percent on 18-of-62 shooting. The Aggies also struggled from long range going 7-of-20 for 35 percent. Cameron handed the ball over 21 times leading to 19 points off turnovers for the Lions.
A&M-Commerce meanwhile shot a sizzling 47 percent from the floor and 38 percent from 3-point range led by
JR Owens and his 4-of-5 performance from deep.
The Lions also controlled the glass with 49 rebounds compared to only 38 for the Aggies.
Williams, the reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, continued his scoring prowess notching his 25 points on an efficient 10-of-14 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. He also picked up his fourth straight double-double and 11th of the season with 16 rebounds. Owens, who provided lock down defense, showed off his long-range game with four triples for 12 points.
Anthony Adams followed with 10 points, while
Christian Macauley scored nine points and provided his usual rim protection with three blocked shots.
Deondre Ray led the Aggies with 19 points, while Jamaal Brantley followed with 10 points.
The Lions have now won 10 of their last 11 and improve to 12-3 on the season and 2-1 in the LSC, while Cameron slips to 9-6 on the year and 1-2 in conference action.
