Zunigia-Romero Propels Lions Past Bisons in Regular Season Finale

Commerce, Texas – Aundria-Zunigia had the game-winning hit and the save in game one and earned the win in game two to lift the A&M-Commerce softball to a 4-3 and 4-2 doubleheader sweep of Harding Saturday at the John Cain Family Softball Field in the Lions regular season finale.

The sweep gives the Lions (29-23) six straight win entering postseason play Friday.  The winning streak matches the longest streak of the season for A&M-Commerce. Ironically, the first six-game spurt came to open the inaugural season, while the second comes at the close of the historic 2015 campaign.
With game one knotted at two in the bottom of the sixth inning, Aundria Zunigia-Romero delivered the game-winning single back up the middle to bring in December Rivers, who led off the inning with a double to center.  Zunigia-Romero capped off the game one with three-out save shutting down the Bisons offense for her second save of the season. Courtney Moore turned in sixth straight quality start allowing just seven hits and two runs in six innings of work to pick up her fifth win of the season.

The Lions started the scoring in the third inning when Lynch doubled in Cherry, who reached on a bunt single, to take a 1-0 lead.  Harding knotted the game in the top of the four inning with a solo homer , but the Lions retook the lead in the fifth inning when Tyler Oppenheim reached on an error that allowed Baylea Higgs, who led off the inning with a single, to score.

The Bisons again pulled even in the top of the sixth inning, but Zunigia-Romero delivered the clincher in the bottom half of the frame.

Six different Lions recorded hits in game one of the twinbill.

Zunigia-Romero picked up where she left off in the circle of game two holding the Bisons bats at bay through the first five innings as the Lions surged out to a 4-0 lead.  Ponce highlighted the early innings with an RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the third.

Zunigia-Romero ran into trouble in the top of the sixth inning after giving up a solo home run before yielding the circle to Moore with runners on second and third with no outs.  Moore got a weak fly ball out for out one, then gave up sacrifice fly to right to as Harding cut the margin down to two runs, 4-2. But, Moore retired the side with a weak ground out to second then mowed down the Bisons in order in the seventh to pick up her fifth save of the season tying her a top the Lone Star Conference stats in saves.

Moore entered play Saturday with the fourth lowest ERA in the LSC at 2.88 only to see it drop a tenth of a point down to 2.78 after the doubleheader.  Moore tossed two innings to allow no hits for the save.

Zunigia-Romero picked up her 14th win of the season, the seventh best mark in the LSC, after working five innings and striking out four.

Ponce paced the Lions at the dish with three hits in three trips to the plate with RBI and two runs scored.  Zunigia-Romero went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the dish for the Lions.

A&M-Commerce will await its fate in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, which is set to begin Friday, May 1.
