Volleyball sweeps road trip with 3-1 win over Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. - The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team picked up its third consecutive win with a 3-1 win over Cameron University on Tuesday. The match was the third of a three-match road trip, which the Lions swept. The set results were 25-13, 25-12, 22-25, 25-9.
 
The win brings the Lions to 16-11 on the season and 10-6 in the Lone Star Conference. They now have their first season with double-digit conference wins since 2012. The Aggies fall to 3-22 and 1-15 in the LSC.
 
The Lions return home for their final homestand of the regular season. They will face Western New Mexico on Friday at the rescheduled time of 5:30 p.m. at the Field House.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- The Lions scored 15 of the final 17 points in the match. Their 25-9 set win was their second largest set win of the season.
- Taryn Driver led the Lions with 17 kills, seven of which came in the first set. Layne Little had 13 kills while Sydney Reyes added 11.
- Rylie Fuentes had four service aces to lead A&M-Commerce. The Lions had six aces, their ninth consecutive match with at least that many.
- The Lions gave up just 24 kills while scoring 65 of their own.
- Fuentes also had 33 assists in the match. She now has more than 600 assists on the season.
- Ashley Mireles led the Lions with 25 digs. She has had at least 20 digs in 15 matches this season.
- The Lions had nine separate runs of at least five consecutive points, including five different seven-point rallies.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
The Aggies took the first two points of the first set, both on attacking errors by the Lions. The A&M-Commerce attack picked up from there, scoring the next seven points, with three kills from Driver and two from Little.
 
The Aggies tried to answer back, taking three of the next four points. But the Lion attack was too much for Cameron. Little and Driver continued their hot-hitting ways. With the Lions leading 15-9, driver again had a three-kill spurt as the Lions again went on a 7-0 run. Little added two more kills to push the Lion lead to 13 points. The Lions took the first set 25-13. Driver had seven kills in the first set. Little added five for A&M-Commerce.
 
The Lions continued to dominate in the second set, scoring seven of the first nine points. Driver and Little each had two kills in the early going. Jaryn Wacker started to heat up in the middle of the set. She had three kills in a five-point series and had four kills overall in the second set, helping to spark another seven-point rally.
 
Toward the end of the set, it was Reyes who had the hot hand. The Lions scored the final five points of the set. Reyes had four consecutive kills in the rally to push the Lions to a 25-12 win in the second set. Reyes had five kills overall in the set.
 
The Aggie attack woke up in the third set. Early in the set, the Aggies scored seven of nine points to take an 8-5 lead. Cameron pushed its lead to six before the Lions began to answer back.
 
The Lions scored the next five points to cut the lead to one. The teams battled back and forth in the latter stages of the set. Shantel Norton had three consecutive kills to keep the Lions within striking distance.
 
However, the Aggies answered back, taking four of the next five points to push their lead to four. They held on to win the third set 25-22.
 
The Lions dominated the fourth set. Jaslyn Wacker and Driver each had two kills as A&M-Commerce scored the first six points of the set.
 
The Aggies attempted a rally, scoring five of six points to cut the Lion lead to three. But the Lions inflicted their will upon Cameron.
 
They had yet another seven-point rally, with a pair of kills for both Wacker sisters. Leading 10-7, the Lions scored 15 of the final 17 points. Jaryn Wacker had three kills in the final set, while Jaslyn Wacker had four. The Lions ran away with the final set, winning 25-9.
