Lions Polish Off Emerald Beach Softball Invitational with Fifth Win of the Weekend

Kingsville, Texas – The Lions won their last scheduled game of the Emerald Beach Softball Invitational hosted by Lone Star Conference affiliate Texas A&M-Kingsville 11-2 over St. Edward's Sunday afternoon.
 
Out of the five games the team, run-ruled Southwestern Oklahoma State, 13-3, Black Hills State, 12-0 and finally St. Edward's 11-2.
 
The Lions also took wins against St. Edward's, 9-3, and Texas A&M-International in an extra innings affair, 10-8.

Turning Point
-The Lions had already scored six on the Hilltoppers after the fourth inning, but the Lions secured five runs in the sixth thanks to Cherie Jackson's grand slam. Jackson's slam and three quick outs in the bottom of the inning secured the Lions win.
 
Inside the box score
-Tyler Oppenheim went 2-for-3 had three runs and one RBI.
 
-Cherie Jackson hit a grand slam racking up five RBI in the game. Jackson has two grand slams on the season and leads the team with four home runs.
 
-Magen Lynch went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
-Anna Hitt pitched three innings and had a strikeout. She faced 14 batters, allowed three hits.
 
-Selena Rima pitched three innings and had a strikeout. She faced 10 batters, allowed zero hits and earned the win.
 
-Monica Cherry played a big part in the infield taking care of four assists.
 
Summary
1st Inning
- The Lions opened the scoring in the game when Luci Ponce double down the right field line to bring in Baylea Higgs, who started the inning off with a double to left center.
 
3rd Inning
- Oppenheim and Lynch singled and scored when Jackson walked on a wild pitch allowing both runners to cross the plate. Haley Colwell hit a single right to the mound scoring Ponce to give the Lions a 4-0 lead.
 
4th Inning
- Oppenheim and Nunez both scored making the score to 6-0 against the Hilltoppers on a Lynch two-run triple.
 
6th Inning
- Cherry reached when she got hit by pitch and came in on Oppenheim's single. Jackson followed with her grand slam over the center field fence to give the Lions an 11-2 lead. The Lions closed out the Hilltoppers allowing no hits and no runs in the bottom of the sixth. Run ruling yet another team in the tournament.
 
What's next
- The Lions will travel to California for a doubleheader against Academy of Art on February 20th and a doubleheader against Dominican University on February 21st.
