Lions Split Twin Bill at Cameron in First Conference DH

Lawton, Okla. – Entering Lone Star Conference play, A&M-Commerce and Cameron were two and three in standings and it showed after two tightly contested games of a doubleheader Friday with the Aggies taking the first game 15-8 and the Lions responding with a 6-5 win in game two.
 
Game 1: Cameron, 15, A&M-Commerce, 8
Turning Point
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Aggies secured the win with three runs adding to the 12 already on the board leading a final score of 15-8.
 
Inside the Box Score
Johnna Sturm hit her first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Sturm finished 1-for-3 with the three RBI.
 
Cherie Jackson added two RBI after going 1-for-3.
 
Summary
3rd Inning
Trailing 3-0, Monica Cherry scored on a Tyler Oppenhiem single to give the Lions their first run of the game and cut into the Aggie lead.
 
4th Inning
Lions had nine hits in the top of the fourth adding seven runs to the board to cut an 11-1 deficit down to 11-8.  Biggest hit came from Sturm and her three run homer. Jackson singled deep to center driving in two runs helping the Lion offense.
 
6th Inning
Despite the late surge from the Lion offense, the Aggies tacked on three runs in the sixth to secure the 15-8 win.
 
Game 2: A&M-Commerce, 6, Cameron, 5
Turning Point
In the top of the sixth, the Lions scored two runs to putting a three-run cushion  up on the Aggies, 6-3, thanks to three hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
 
Inside the Box Score
Haley Colwell hit her second homer of the season in the top of the second.
 
Brittany Woolridge picked up the win after 5.1 innings of work. She allowed just two hits. The win moved Woolridge to 4-1 on the season.
 
Katie Dean earned her first save of the season after one and two thirds innings of scoreless work in the circle.
 
Baylea Higgs went 3-for-4, had two runs scored, one RBI. She also hit her first triple of the season.
 
Tyler Oppenheim went 2-for-3 and had two RBI.
 
 Summary
1st Inning
Higgs started the scoring for the Lion offense after she crossed the plate on a ball off of Jackson's bat. Higgs opened the game with an infield single.
 
2nd Inning
Haley Colwell led off for the Lions and smacked home run setting a good tone for the team in the second inning. Oppenheim single to center and Nunez slid into home just in the nick of time beating the Aggie catcher and giving the Lions a 3-1 lead in the top of the inning. Cameron answered in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own cutting the Lion lead down to 3-2 after two.
 
4th Inning
Higgs opened the inning with a triple and scoring the only run for the Lions in the top of the fourth when she crossed the plate on an Oppenheim groundout to make it 4-2 Lions. Again, Cameron answered with a run in the home half to cut the lead back to a run, 4-3.
 
6th Inning
Higgs hit a single to left field scoring Hatton who started the inning off with a pinch-hit double to center.  The Lions added what held up to be the game-winning run when Jackson hit sacrifice fly to left.  Cameron fought back scoring two in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer, but the Lions avoided further trouble when Woolrigde entered slamming the door on the Aggies for the 6-5 win.
 
What's Next
The Lions play second half of series against the Aggies, Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
