Jackson’s Power Pushes Lions to a Pair of Wins to Open 2016

San Antonio, Texas - Cherie Jackson provided all the power in a pair of wins, 11-5 over Lubbock Christian and 7-1 over St. Edwards', for the A&M-Commerce softball on the opening day of the 2016 season on day one of the St. Mary's DII College Softball Classic.

Game 1: A&M-Commerce 11, Lubbock Christian 5
Turning Point
- With the game tied at two after two and a half innings, Cherie Jackson clubbed a grand slam to highlight a five-run third inning that gave the Lions a 7-2 lead.

Inside the box score
- Katie Dean pitched three innings to earn the win.

- Jackson's grand slam was the first of her career.

- Luci Ponce hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Ponce finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

- Haley Colwell went 3-for-3 and had two RBI.

- Magen Lynch hit double in the bottom of the fifth. She finished 2-for-4with two RBI and a run scored.

- The Lions opened the season for the second straight year with a win.

- The A&M-Commerce win snapped LCU's perfect 6-0 record to start the season.

Summary
1st Inning
- Ponce got the ball rolling the first inning with the Lions trailing 1-0 with a two-run home run to give A&M-Commerce a 2-1 lead after the first.

3rd Inning
- In the top of the third after LCU had already pushed across a run to knot the score, the Chaps had the bases loaded with a chance to gain the lead, but Kylene Hatton made a big to catch a pop fly for the third out to end the threat.

- The game changer came in the bottom of the third when Cherie Jackson smacked her grand slam to highlight a five-run inning that gave the Lions a 7-2 lead.

5th Inning
- After Chaps trimmed the Lion lead down to 7-4, A&M-Commerce answered with a pair back-to-back doubles by Colwell and Lynch to regain control of the contest, 11-4.

6th Inning
Lubbock Christian scored one run in the top of the six on two hits, but never threaten as the Lions earned the 11-5 win.
Game 2: A&M-Commerce 7, St. Edward's 1
Turning Point
- Jackson provided a two-run homer in the third inning and solo shot in the fifth inning to spark the Lions' offense. Her first blast provided an early 4-1 lead for the Lions in the third.

Inside the box score
- Jackson went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two home runs. She accounted for 10 total bases as she clubbed a leadoff double in the second inning. Jackson's two bombs matched the school record for homers in a single-game.

-Lynch continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.

-Brittany Woolridge pitched seven innings and recorded seven to earn the win. It was the freshman's first collegiate win.

Summary
2nd Inning
-In the top of the second with the Lions trailing 1-0, Jackson hit a ball deep into left center for a double. After stealing third, Higgs platted Jackson after she reached on an error to knot the game. Higgs moved herself into scoring position after swiping second and third before crossing the plate when Ciera Nunez reached on an error to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.

3rd Inning
-The Lions extended the lead on the Hill Toppers following a two-run homer from Jackson that drove Luci Ponce.

5th Inning
- Lynch hit a one-out triple to right center and scored when Ponce hit a grounder to second base to pick up the RBI. Jackson followed with her second homerun of the night to give the Lions a 6-1 lead.

6th Inning
- Higgs plated the final run of the game after she reached on an infield single and moved around to score following a wild pitch.
