The Lions Split on Last Day of the St. Mary’s College Classic

San Antonio, Texas- The Lions took the lead early against Colorado School of Mines and kept tensions high up until the fifth inning against nationally ranked team St. Mary's University. A&M-Commerce ended the first weekend of play with a 3-1 record.
 
"I am proud of the way we played this weekend. Winning three in-region games is a great way to start the season," said head coach Richie Bruister.
 
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 8, Colorado School of Mines 3
Turning Point
-With the Lions down by one Cayla Dobson hit a double in the bottom of the first inning brining Cherie Jackson and Luci Ponce in for two RBI. The lions maintained the lead for the remainder of the game.
 
Inside the box score
-Katie Dean pitched 3.2 innings and had two strikeouts to earn the win.
 
-Selena Rima pitched 3.1 innings and had four strikeouts.
 
-Tyler Oppeheim, Monica Cherry and Ashleigh Hinshaw were hit by pitches and gained bases in the game.
 
-Ponce went 2-for-4 and had 2 RBI.
 
Summary
1st Inning
- Ponce singled to left center, Jackson walked and Cayla Dobson doubled to left center to pick two RBI as Ponce and Jackson came around to score.
 
2nd Inning
-The Lions pounded out four hits and scored six runs in the second inning highlighted by a Ponce two-RBI single to take an 8-1 lead.
 
4th Inning
- Colorado Mines scored two runs in the top of the 4th inning to trim the margin down to 8-3, but were not able to get back into the game as the Lions clinched the win.
 
Game 2: St. Mary's 12, A&M-Commerce 2
Turning Point
The Lions trailed 3-1 after the first inning and the Rattlers scored six rus in the sixth inning doubling their lead over the Lions in the 12-2 win.
 
Inside the box score
-Brittany Woolridge pitched 4.2 innings with only seven hits allowed and three strikeouts.
 
-Lynch batted 2-for-4 to lead the Lions offensively.
 
-Colwell drove in the only run of the game for the Lions.
 
Summary
1st Inning
-Colwell walked and moved around to score to put the Lions on the board first, however the Rattlers scored three runs, one of them unearned and took the lead for the rest of the game.
 
5th Inning
- The Rattlers scored three more on two hits to extend its lead to 6-1 thanks to a three-RBI homer.
 
6th Inning
- Colwell singled to center field with two outs to score Oppenheim, who reached on a walk to cut the Rattlers lead down to 6-2, but St. Mary's scored six runs following a grand slam in a grand slam to seal the 12-2 win.
 
Summary
- The Lions will return to action with five games in Kingsville in a tournament. A&M-Commerce will open with the five-game weekend with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m.
