Commerce, Texas— The Lions just made the Lone Star Conference more interesting after sweeping Cameron this season in a 53-47 victory Wednesday, February 3.

1st HalfThe Lions came out strong with two early buckets by
Artaejah Gay and a three-pointer by
Gabby Scott to put the Lions up 7-4 in the first quarter. Cameron rallied off a small 6-0 run and took a 10-9 lead late in the quarter just to see
Gabby Scott nail her second triple of quarter to put the Lions up 12-10 at the end of the period.
Gabby Scott continued to let the game come to her as the Lions started the quarter on a 6-0 run with Scott being responsible for four of those points.
Shomari Harris added a couple of buckets to help keep the pressure on the Aggies and ultimately went into the half with a 25-22 lead. Although Cameron shot better than the Lions from the field in the first half, the Lions defense contained the streaky shooting Aggies, as they shot 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. Cameron outscored the Lions in the paint 16-12 but the Lions 14 forced turnovers translated into six points that played a role in their three-point halftime lead. In 14 minutes,
Gabby Scott put up 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and three steals. For the Aggies, Charron Montgomery led the way with eight points, one assists, and one steal.
2nd HalfThe third quarter turned out to be the highest scoring quarter of the game with both teams combining to score 29 points. The Lions had a sloppy quarter with four turnovers but a 10-0 run highlighted by
Natalie Hessong five consecutive points put the Lions up 40-29 with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter. Brandi Leal then made her presence known knocking down two consecutive threes within the last minute. A made free throw attempt by Cristina Soriano brought the Aggies within four points as they cut the Lions 11-point lead down in a matter of one minute to 40-36 heading into the final quarter.
Charron Montgomery immediately gets the bucket to start the fourth quarter, bringing the Aggies within two points, 40-38. The Lions answered back with a three-pointer by
Krystal Pickron to begin a 7-2 run to put the Lions ahead 47-40. However, Dayla Threatt and Brandi Leal each strike from downtown making it a one-point game 47-46 with 3:20 left in the game. The Lions went on to win 53-47 after neither team scored another field goal for the remainder of the game. The Lions finished the game at the charity stripe shooting 4-of-6 to come away with their seventh win at home this season.

What's NextThe Lions will meet with Texas Woman's for the second time this season on Thursday, February 4. The Pioneers are 17-5 this season and sits towards the top of the conference with a 7-3 record. Texas Woman's is coming off of a 64-58 win against Midwestern State after dropping two consecutive games to Angelo State and Cameron. The Pioneers shoots 40 percent from the floor and roughly 30 percent from the three-point line in Lone Star Conference games this season. They also are a decently synched unit as they average 12 assists per game although turning the ball over 20 times per contest in conference play. Erin Maxwell and Kenesha Saygo lead the Pioneers with their Shaq and Kobe like combination, both averaging 12 points each since beginning Lone Star Conference competition. Maxwell is the leading rebounder in the Lone Star Conference in all games played and averages 8.6 boards per game this season. Kara Mitchell is another key standout for the Pioneers as she averages nine points per game, but leads Texas Woman's with 44 assists and 34 steals.
The Lions are 35-41 all-time against the Pioneers and will try to bring a two-game losing streak against the Pioneers to a halt.
