1st HalfGabby Scott started the game hot for the Lions, shooting 3-of-4 from the floor to lead the Mustangs 7-5 four minutes into the first quarter. Although the Lions controlled most of the quarter, two consecutive treys late by the Mustangs put them ahead 21-18 after one quarter. Krishawn Crockett had much to say in the quarter after scoring ten first quarter points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Shomari Harris connects on a three pointer right out of the gates to tie the game at 21. The Lions later went on an 8-0 run to lead 34-31 and forced the Mustangs into four turnovers in four minutes. The Lions ended the quarter slow however, after shooting 0-of-4 from the floor as the Mustangs hit another three late to tie the game at the half at 37.
Both teams shot well in the first half as Midwestern State shot 48.6 percent (15-of-31) from the floor, and the Lions shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the floor. Both teams battled on the glass in the first half, and tied at 15 rebounds each. They both also moved the ball well in the first half, with 13 assists from the Lions and 11 assists from the Mustangs.
Gabby Scott led the Lions after one half with ten points while
Krystal Pickron,
Artaejah Gay, and
Shomari Harris each chipped in with nine, eight, and seven points respectively. Krishawn Crockett finished the half with ten points (all coming in the first quarter) and Kristin Rydell followed with eight points for the Mustangs.
2nd HalfIn the third quarter, both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in what was a tight ten-minute period that resulted in five lead changes. The Lions defense made it extremely hard for the Mustangs, as Midwestern State shot 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from the floor. The Lions won the third quarter 17-16 after
Amari Jones hit a clutch jump shot as time expired, putting the Lions ahead 54-53 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lions opened the final period of play on a 7-0 run to grasp an eight-point 61-53 lead, their largest of the night. A&M-Commerce lock down defense continued to frustrate the Mustangs, who finally scored their first points of the quarter with 3:47 remaining on the clock.
Gabby Scott put the nail in the coffin after an acrobatic layup fell to put the Lions up 63-57 with a minute on the clock. The game was sealed soon after two free throws made by
Shomari Harris and
Krystal Pickron each. The Lions went on to take the game 67-59.
