Commerce, Texas – The A&M-Commerce softball suffered a doubleheader sweep, 6-3 and 5-3, on the road at Texas Woman's dropping the Lions record to 23-11 overall and 9-9 in the Lone Star Conference.
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 3, Texas Woman's, 6Turning PointIn the bottom of the second, the Pioneers scored three runs on top of their previous to take a 4-0 lead. TWU never trailed in the game to pick up the 6-3 win.
Inside the Box ScoreHaley Colwell went 2-for-4 and scored a run, leading the Lions at the plate.
Baylea Higgs also went 2-for-4 and had an RBI.
Selena Rima pitched the entire game for the Lions with four strikeouts and only allowing one earned run despite taking the loss in the circle.
The Loins had five errors in the game that led to five unearned runs for the Pioneers.
Summary1st InningThe Pioneers jumped on the Lions early scoring one run in the bottom of the inning.
2nd InningTexas Woman's added three runs on two hits and two Lion errors to take a 4-0 lead.
4th InningCherie Jackson and Colwell opened the hitting with a pair of singles.
Johnna Sturm was hit by pitch to load the bases for
Tyler Oppenheim. Oppenheim singled to left scoring
Danielle Guerra, who pinch ran for Jackson.
Ciera Nunez drove home Colwell when she reached on a fielder's choice. After a walk, Higgs single to left to bring in Oppenheim for the final run of the inning as the Lions cut the defict down to 4-3.
TWU answered with two runs on three hits and two more Lion errors to take a 6-3 lead. The margin would be enough to hold the Lions off over the final two innings as the Pioneers took the win.
Game 2: A&M-Commerce 3, Texas Woman's 5Turning PointAfter the Lions scored a run in the top of the first, TWU answered with five runs on four hits, all singles, to take a 5-1 lead.
Inside the Box ScoreKylene Hatton was the lone Lion with multiple hits after her 2-for-2 performance at the plate. She also reached on a two walks.
Jackson had one hit, a double, in her four trips to the plate. She also drove in a run.
Brittany Woolridge went five and a third innings in relief in a no decision. She allowed just five hits and gave up no runs.
Summary1st InningJackson gave the Lions a 1-0 lead when she smoked a two-out double to left scoring Hatton who had reached on a walk to start the inning.
TWU answered in the bottom half with its only runs of the game. The five runs gave the Pioneers a 5-1 lead after the first frame.
2nd InningA&M-Commerce cut the deficit down to 5-2 when
Monica Cherry singled to center scoring Oppenheim.
6th InningThe Lions made a charge at the lead in the sixth inning when Hatton drove in Magan Lynch with a single to left. Lynch had a one-out pinch-hit triple to set up the inning. However, TWU recorded the final two outs of the inning to avoid further damage and solidify the win.
