Lions Split with Pioneers in Second Half of LSC Series

Denton, TX – After suffering a two game loss in the first half of the series the Lions split with the Pioneers falling in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader 9-1 and salvaging the series with a 5-3 win in game two.
 
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 1, Texas Woman's 9
Turning Point
The Pioneers took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning where they scored three runs with hot bats hitting two doubles and two singles.
 
Inside the Box Score
Selena Rima pitched five innings for the Lions and getting the loss. Rima faced 28 batters and had six strikeouts.
 
Kylene Hatton had the only RBI of the game for the Lions.
 
Hayley Colwell went 2-for-3 at the plate and walked once.
 
Ciera Nunez went 2-for-2 and score the one run for the Lions on Hatton's hit.
 
Summary
2nd Inning
The Pioneers scored three runs off of four hits and left one on base.
 
4th Inning
Nunez singled to second base and advanced to second when Johnna Sturm was hit by pitch. Hatton singled and Nunez's wheels brought her home as Hatton picked up the RBI.
 
5th Inning
Pioneers scored one run in the bottom of the inning putting the Lions at a three run deficit, 4-1.
 
6th Inning
The Pioneers kept the ball rolling with five final runs to run rule the Lions. TWU had five runs, three hits and took advantage of two Lion errors in the inning.

Turning Point
With the score knotted at three in the top of the seventh, Sturm drove in what held up to be the game winning run with a double down the right field line scoring Colwell, who led off the inning with a double. Sturm scored two batters later when Tyler Oppenheim reached on an error to give the Lions a 5-3 lead.
 
Inside the Box Score
Luci Ponce had a hot bat hitting the only homer of the day and going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Colwell was consistent again at the plate for the Lions going 2-for-4 and scoring one run.
 
Nunez was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish for the Lions.
 
Brittany Woolridge was in the circle for the Lions all game getting the win after facing 27 batters.
 
Summary
2nd Inning
Monica Cherry singled to left center and scored on Nunez's single getting the Lions on a scoreboard first.
 
3rd Inning
Luci Ponce came to the plate and sent the ball for a ride with a solo home run. The Pioneers answered scoring one run in the home half, but still trailed the Lions by one, 2-1.
 
4th Inning
The Pioneers knotted up the score at two after scoring one in the bottom of the inning.
 
5th Inning
The Pioneers took the lead scoring on a Lion throwing error, but the Lions answered with quick outs leaving two Pioneers on base avoiding further damage.
 
6th Inning
The Lions tied the game at  three when Nunez scored on a Baylea Higgs infield single.
 
7th Inning
Colwell lead off the inning doubling to left center and scored on Sturm's double down the left field line.  Oppenheim reached on an error and Sturm scored. Woolridge set the Pioneers down in order in the bottom half of the inning securing the 5-3 win for A&M-Commerce.
 
What's Next
A&M-Commerce head to Odessa for a single doubleheader vs. University of Texas – Permian Basin on March 29 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m..Then the Lions play an LSC series at home vs. Tarleton State on April 1 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on April 2 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
