Commerce, TX – A&M-Commerce softball won game one against Tarleton State 5-3 before the TexAnn's fired back with a 5-2 win in game two Friday night at the John Cain Family Softball Field in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader.
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 5, Tarleton, 3Turning PointBaylea Higgs and
Ciera Nunez scored runs on an error breaking a tie at threee to and give the Lions a 5-3 lead in the fourth.
Inside the Box ScoreKatie Dean got the win in the circle after pitching five innings in relief. She had a personal best eight strikeouts in a game. Her previous high was three.
Higgs went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs.
Magen Lynch went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Nunez had numbers across the stat sheet after two hits in three trips to the plate, scoring two runs and driving in an RBI for her team.
Summary2nd InningTarleton scored two runs on the Lions in the top of the inning taking the first lead of the game. The Lions answered with three runs in the top when Lynch scored on Nunez's single to right, and
Kylene Hatton hit a two-run double bringing Lynch and Higgs across the plate.
3rd InningThe TexAnn's knotted up the score at three runs after scoring once in the top of the inning.
4th InningThe Lions topped off the runs for the game scoring two runs for the win. Higgs and Nunez each hit singles before scoring on a TexAnn error earning the 5-3 win.
Game 2: A&M-Commerce 2, Tarleton, 5Turning PointIn the top of the first inning the TexAnn's scored four runs including a three run homer and a single homer. They then held the Lions to zero until the sixth inning. The Lions never gained the lead which lead to the 5-2 loss.
Inside the Box ScoreLuci Ponce led the Lions at the plate with her tenth home run of the season driving in a pair of runs. She went 1-for-2 in the game and was hit by pitch getting on base in two of her three trips to the plate.
Selena Rima pitched all seven innings and was saddled with the loss.
Summary1st InningThe TexAnn's hit two homers that resulted in four runs taking control of the game.
2nd InningTarleton added one more run in the top of the frame extending the lead out to 5-0.
6th InningPonce hit a powerful homer over the fence in right center and brought in Hatton who reached on a single. Ponce's hit wrapped up the scoring for the game leading to the DH split.
