Johnna Sturm gave A&M-Commerce a doubleheader sweep over Oklahoma Baptist with a walk off grand slam in the seventh inning lifting the Lions to a 7-6 win over Oklahoma Baptist after taking the first game 11-1 Tuesday night in nonconference action at the John Cain Memorial Field.
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 11, Oklahoma Baptist 1Turning PointHaley Colwell used her power to smash a three-run homer giving the Lions a 4-1 lead over the Bison after the first.
Inside the Box ScoreBaylea Higgs went 2-for-2 and walked once. She had one run and two RBI.
Luci Ponce went 2-for-3 at the plate; she had two runs and two RBI.
Colwell led her team in RBI with four. She went 1-for 2 at the plate and scored two runs. Her home run was the third of the year for the senior.
Katie Dean, the reigning LSC Pitcher of the Week, pitched all five innings in the circle; she faced 20 batters and had four strikeouts.
Summary1st InningHiggs singled and scored a run on Ponce's single. Sturm was hit by pitch. Ponce and Sturm both crossed the plate when Colwell homered to left center.
3rd InningAfter a series of walks, a single and a Higgs' double the Lions scored four runs to take an 8-1 lead over the Bison.
4th InningColwell hit a SAC fly to center and brought in Hatton.
Magen Lynch singled up the middle for an RBI plating Ponce.
Cherie Jackson walked with the bases loaded scoring the final run of the game and giving the Lions the 11-1 win.
Game 2: A&M-Commerce 7, Oklahoma Baptist 6Turning PointIn the bottom of the seventh, Sturm hit a walk off grand slam giving the Lions the come-from-behind, one-run win.
Inside the Box ScoreOppenheim went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Lions.
Sturm's grand slam gave her the team's RBI lead with four.
Hatton went 2-for-3 and walked once, she platted one run and got and RBI.
Dean picked up the win after tossing one inning in relief with one strikeout.
Summary1st InningHiggs scored on Hatton's single through the right side for the first run of the game.
2nd InningMonica Cherry grounded out but drove in Lynch, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
4th InningThe Bison scored their first run of the game in the top of the inning, and the Lions answered with another run when
Danielle Guerra, who came on as a pinch runner for Sturm, scored when
Monica Cherry grounded out.
6th InningThe Bison made a big comeback scoring three runs and take a 4-3 lead on the Lions.
7th InningOklahoma Baptist scored two more runs putting a three-run deficit between themselves and the Lions with only half an inning of play left.
Higgs started the Lion rally with a leadoff single.
Ciera Nunez followed with another single and Hatton walked to load the bases with no outs. A batter later, Sturm delivered the knock out blow to give the Lions the 7-6 win.
