The Lions are coming off of a 2-1 win over Dallas Baptist on Tuesday. Head coach
Neil Piper was proud of his team for pulling off the come-from-behind win after failing to do so in their loss Sunday.
"It was a similar game to the last couple we have had where we played well but just couldn't get a result," he said. It was good that we worked hard, especially in the second half. We played hard and deserved to win."
The Lions were able to score two goals in the second half of the DBU match. The Lions have been able to play well in the second half of games after sluggish starts in a few recent matches. Piper is hoping his team can learn to channel this play into an entire match.
"I think you just don't get the luck of the bounce sometimes," Piper said. "You get down and you make one stupid mistake. And when you play good teams, they are going to take advantage of it. We are getting there. We are not playing horrendous, but when you play good teams, you have to be ready. We better be ready Friday night."
The Lions face conference leader Angelo State on Friday. A win for the Lions would bring the teams even in the win column. With a pretty even conference standings near the midway point of the season, Piper knows the conference title is still up for grabs for the team that takes advantage. He knows it starts with playing well against ASU.
"As far as the conference, it is pretty even right now," he said. "Pretty much every game has been tight. Angelo State is obviously a good team. They are big and physical. They have some pace up front. They are a handful. We have seen them play twice this year live. They have seen us play twice. I'm sure they will have a few different wrinkles this late in the season. But I expect a very fast-paced, physical game, just like they always are between them and us."
The Lions will then face UT Permian Basin on Sunday. While the Falcons have struggled so far this season, Piper sees an improved team from their first season joining the LSC.
"They have had a couple good results this year," Piper said of UTPB. "They struggled a bit last year. But they have gotten some good players in and are playing everybody a lot closer this year. I'll be watching their film on Saturday."
