OPENING UP WITH A BANG
• The A&M-Commerce Lions come into the 2017 season as the favorite to win the Lone Star Conference championship and will test themselves right out of the gate with the North Alabama Lions.
• This is a matchup of two teams ranked in the top six of the AFCA preseason poll, both with significant success in 2016.
• A&M-Commerce advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, while North Alabama is the defending NCAA Division II national runner-up.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• This is the first meeting between the two schools.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
• With an 8-1 conference record, the Lions won the 2016 Lone Star Conference championship outright.
• This marked the third consecutive LSC championship for A&M-Commerce.
• In LSC history, a three-year championship run has happened 12 times since the league's founding in 1932.
• A&M-Commerce has had a three-year championship streak four times.
• This is the first since 1957-59.
• ET won five straight championships from 1951-55, which was the beginning of eight championships in nine seasons in the 1950s.
LOOKING FOR NUMBER FOUR
• The Lions are now on the prowl for their fourth straight LSC title, which would be the first such streak for the school since the 1951-55 run of five straight titles.
• The last time an LSC team won four straight titles was Texas A&M-Kingsville from 2001-04. The 2001 title was shared.
• Texas A&M-Kingsville's run of five outright titles from 1993-97 is the only time an LSC team has won four straight outright titles in the league's history.
LIONS RIDING HOT HAND
• In the four seasons under head coach
Colby Carthel, the Lions have rattled off the second-best four-year streak in school history
• Over the last four seasons, the Lions have won 35 games against only 14 losses.
• The school record for a four-year span is 36 wins, from 1951-54.
• Eight or more victories in 2017 would tie or pass the 36-win mark for four seasons.

LIONS EARN FIRST PLAYOFF WIN IN 25 YEARS
• A&M-Commerce's 34-23 first round playoff victory over Colorado Mesa gave the Lions their first playoff win since 1991.
• That 1991 win was also the last time A&M-Commerce hosted playoff action.
• A&M-Commerce is now 4-1 all-time in postseason games in Memorial Stadium.
• The Lions have made 13 overall trips to the postseason with a 9-7-1 record.
ELEVEN WINS TIES SCHOOL'S BEST
• The 11th win of the season on November 19 put the 2016 Lions' squad in a tie for the most wins in a season in school history.
• The 1952 ET team went 11-0 with a win in the Tangerine Bowl.
• Perhaps the most dominant team in Lion history, that 1952 squad won every game by at least 20 points.
CARTHEL 5TH IN SCHOOL HISTORY IN WINS
• Head coach
Colby Carthel now ranks fifth in A&M-Commerce history in coaching wins with 34 wins.
• However, he will be in fifth for a while, as his 34 wins are just over half of J.V. Sikes' 63 wins in fourth place.

MACHORRO IS TOP RETURNING LINEMAN
• The Lion offensive line was led by Gene Upshaw Award nominee
Jared Machorro, who was also named first team all-Lone Star Conference at tackle to lead honors for one of the top units in the land.
• Machorro earned five All-America honors following the 2016 season:
• AFCA Division II Second Team All-American
• D2CCA Second Team All-American
• Associated Press' Little All-America Second Team
•
Don Hansen Division II Third Team All-American
• D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American
• He also earned two all-region honors, being named D2CCA First Team All-Super Region and
Don Hansen's Football Gazette Second Team All-Super Region Four.
• This preseason, he was named a preseason All-American by
Street & Smith's college football preview magazine.
• Also on the Lion offensive line, center
Jon Aguilar, and tackles
Malik Ellis and
Poet Thomas, are returning after earning all-LSC honorable mention.
• In addition to blocking for one of the nation's top rushers and the one of the top offenses in the Lone Star Conference, the Lion offensive line prided itself on its protection of Perez.
• The Lions ranked 2nd nationally in sacks allowed per game (0.42), with five total sacks allowed.
• Even more impressive - the Lions allowed their five sacks on 425 pass dropbacks.
• Averaging it out, the Lions allowed a sack every 85 dropbacks.
HOOKS' RETURNS SPARK LIONS
• Prior to Lone Star Conference Media Day,
Shawn Hooks was named to the College Football America 2017 Yearbook Division II Starting Lineup - CFA's version of an All-America team.
• This is his first preseason All-America honor, joining Perez & Machorro.
• For an exceptional season of punt returning,
Shawn Hooks earned multiple postseason honors.
• He was named a D2CCA Second Team All-American and a Don Hansen's Football Gazette Division II All-American Honorable Mention.
• Within the region, he was named D2CCA First Team All-Super Region and Don Hansen Second Team All-Super Region Four.
• At the conference level, he was named First Team All-Lone Star Conference and was a two-time conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
• Hooks sealed the LSC Championship with a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the Lions' 30-10 victory over Tarleton State.
• That was his third punt return for a touchdown in 2016.
• He is one of three players in all four divisions of NCAA football with three punt returns for touchdowns last season.
• Hooks is joined by Texas A&M's Christian Kirk and James Madison's Rashard Davis (4) in the club of players with three punt return TDs in 2016.
YOU SHALL NOT PASS
• The Lions led the conference and ranked 4th nationally in interceptions as a team, picking off 23 of their opponents' passes.
• While this is impressive, perhaps more impressive is that 16 different players notched interceptions, including five linebackers and two defensive linemen.
• The Lions' four picks vs. West Texas A&M were their most in one game in 2016.
WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE
• The Lions led the nation in turnovers gained, and finished second in the nation in turnover margin.
• In addition to the 23 interceptions gained by the defense, the Lions also recovered 15 fumbles, which ranked eighth in the nation.

GARRIGAN EARNS NFL BILL WALSH DIVERSITY COACHING FELLOWSHIP
• Defensive backs coach
Darren Garrigan received the NFL's Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship for the second consecutive year.
• He worked with the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the Fellowship from July 22-August 11 as the staff prepared for training camp at Missouri Western State in St. Joseph, Mo.
• This is Garrigan's second year in a row earning the Fellowship, after working with the Detroit Lions in 2016.
• The program's objective is to use NFL clubs' training camps, offseason workout program and minicamps to give talented coaches opportunities to observe, participate, gain experience, and ultimately gain a full-time NFL coaching position.
• Garrigan has coached at A&M-Commerce since 2014, with his secondary producing 10 All-Lone Star Conference and three All-Region players, including 2016 LSC Defensive Back of the Year
Uriah Harris. In three seasons, the Lion defense has intercepted 52 passes and caused 102 pass breakups. During the 2016 season, the Lions led the LSC and were fourth in the nation with 23 interceptions. Nine different defensive backs recorded at least one interception on the season. This bolstered the Lion defense that led all of Division II in takeaways with a staggering 38 takeaways.
JAMES THROWER IS 2017 INDUCTEE TO LONE STAR CONFERENCE HALL OF HONOR
• The 2017 inductee to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor is former Texas A&M University-Commerce three-sport standout James Thrower.
• Thrower is the sole inductee to the 2017 class of the LSC Hall of Honor, which recognizes outstanding individuals who have brought pride and honor to the conference through their contributions as an athlete or who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the betterment of the conference as a coach or administrator.
• Thrower, who is the 12th Lion to be enshrined, was chosen by a panel of athletic administrators throughout the league.
• Thrower, class of 1970, was a three-sport athlete at East Texas State University, where he participated on the Lions' football, basketball and track and field teams, and majored in English and physical education.
• The Camden, Ark. native came to ETSU on a basketball scholarship, but it was on the football field that he truly excelled. As a three-year starter on the football team, he intercepted 12 passes for 135 yards. He also earned a varsity letter in basketball and two in track and field as a member of the 440-yard relay team and in the high jump.
• Following his playing days at ETSU, Thrower went on to a six-year career in the NFL. He spent three seasons as a defensive back with the Philadelphia Eagles, and an additional three seasons as a defensive back for the Detroit Lions.
• After a knee injury in 1975, Thrower transitioned into corporate America serving as a loan executive and as an executive assistant to the board chairman of the NAACP. Thrower formerly served on the City of Detroit Board of Water Commissioners and is the president and CEO of Jamjomar, Inc. He and his wife, Marla, are both owner/operators of numerous McDonald's franchises - Marla in the Detroit metropolitan area and James in the New Orleans area.
• The Throwers are very active in other corporate and community groups including the McDonald's Operators National Advertising Committee, National Black McDonald's Association, Ronald McDonald Children's Charities, National Football League Alumni Players Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Golden Heritage, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. They are members of Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and have four children, James II, Jamar, Joni, and Marissa. Each of the Thrower children are also McDonald's owners/operators, totaling 29 franchises owned and operated in the family.
• Thrower and his wife Marla are proud to have provided the leadership gift to the
Thrower Student-Athlete Success Center, which is the premier academic and success support center for student-athletes in all of Division II. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus at A&M-Commerce in 2012, and was inducted into the Lion Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
