RICHARDSON – Texas A&M University-Commerce forward Alexis Bryant has been named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The superlative was announced by the conference office on Monday. It is the first Player of the Week award of her career, and the second Defensive Player of the Week award for the team this season.
 
Bryant– a senior from Pflugerville– was a disruptive force on both sides of the ball for the Lions as they opened conference play with two wins. Against St. Mary's, Bryant had a pair of blocks and had 11 rebounds, recording a double-double to go with her 16 points. To go with her two blocks, Bryant also altered several shot attempts, helping to hold the Rattlers to under 33 percent shooting in the game. She then had a career-high four blocks and a pair of steals against St. Edward's, leading the Lions to another 20-plus point win. Bryant also pulled in eight rebounds and had 14 points, helping cement the paint for A&M-Commerce on both ends. Bryant and the Lions held SEU to under 32 percent from the field.
 
So far this season, the Lions rank ninth in Division II in scoring defense, 16th in scoring margin, 16th in blocks per game, and 25th in field goal defense. A&M-Commerce is allowing fewer than 50 points a game so far on the year.
 
Bryant and the Lions return to action on Tuesday as they host Southeastern Oklahoma State. The game will be played at 6 p.m. at the Field House.
