Lions surge into national rankings for first time in 11 years, ranked No. 20

LILBURN, Ga. – The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team is the No. 20 ranked team in the nation, as released by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Tuesday. It is the first time the Lions have been nationally ranked by the WBCA since Jan. 8, 2008, the year after the team advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

The Lions have begun the season with five consecutive wins, the first time in the history of the program that the team has won its first five games. The Lions are playing suffocating defense to begin the year, holding teams to just 48.8 points per game, which ranks eighth in the nation. The Lions are also in the top 30 rankings in blocks per game, field goal defense, scoring margin and turnovers forced.

There are three teams from the Lone Star Conference in this week's national rankings. Lubbock Christian, the defending national champions, are ranked No. 2, and are the only other undefeated LSC team in the league. West Texas A&M is also ranked at No. 21.

The No. 20 Lions return to the court today as they host No. 18 Southeastern Oklahoma State, who also entered the national rankings for the first time this week. The game will be played at 6 p.m. at the Field House.
